Chemistry is the science that uses a molecular approach to study properties and transformations of the materials of living and non-living systems.
- Three and four-year (honours) programs lead to a bachelor of science in chemistry.
- Students can specialize in environmental chemistry, geochemistry, industrial chemistry and materials chemistry (pharmaceutical chemistry option available in three-year program offered in French) nationally-accredited programs include formal lectures and lab sessions providing a hands-on approach to instrumentation
- Emphasis on problem-solving and communication skills prepares students for many challenging careers in today’s technology-oriented society
- Possibility of working on research projects with professors at the university or with scientists in the local mining industry, at the Northeastern Ontario Regional Cancer Centre and the Northern Ontario School of Medicine.
Also available: certificate in environmental chemistry, master’s degree in chemical sciences, and PhD in biomolecular sciences
Prospects: chemical industry, education, environmental monitoring and remediation, food industry, graduate studies, pharmaceutical industry, plastic and petrochemical industry, public service, quality assurance and quality control, research institutes...
Offered in English and French. See "Chimie" on French side of Calendar.
Admission requirements
Ontario secondary schools
- 1 grade 12 4U mathematics
- 2 grade 12 4U sciences
- 1 grade 12 4U English
- 2 other grade 12 4U/M courses
It is recommended that secondary school students include courses in calculus, chemistry and physics in their OAC/U level program. Students without these calculus or chemistry courses must take an upgrading course before enrolling in the required 1st-year calculus or chemistry course. Students with an OAC/U level credit in calculus, but with a grade of less than 60%, are strongly advised to take MATH 1912 as a refresher course before proceeding to MATH 1036.
See Admissions for other requirements.
General information
The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry offers 3 and 4-year programs that reflect the advances in the chemical sciences.
These programs provide graduates with a sound knowledge of the fundamental principles and the practical techniques required in the application and advanced studies of chemistry. The programs also develop problem-solving and analytical skills, critical reasoning, computational and communication skills (verbal, written and computing languages), which will allow students to compete successfully in today’s technology-oriented society.
The chemistry programs provide an excellent preparation for careers in the chemical and pharmaceutical industry, in various governmental agencies and in teaching. Students are also successful in graduate studies. The programs provide a solid foundation for studies in the health science professions and in health science research in such fields as medicine, dentistry, optometry and pharmacy.
The department collaborates with scientists from the regional resource industry, the Northeastern Ontario Regional Cancer Centre and the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, which provide the possibility for students at the undergraduate and graduate level to participate in joint research projects.
