General information

Laurentian University offers a Bachelor of Education program to be taken concurrently with an initial degree

The primary goal of the program is to foster the development of dedicated and exceptional educators who, in accord with The Ontario College of Teachers “Foundations of Professional Practice,” will behave in such a way as to bring honour and dignity to the pro¬fession and who will regard as their first duty the effective education of their pupils.

B.Ed. candidates will become competent pro¬fessionals, using holistic teaching approaches that respect student diversity.

The program is offered in two areas of concentration:
Primary/Junior Division (level I)
Junior/Intermediate Division (level II)

Primary/Junior Division
Students enrolling in a Primary/Junior program are deemed to be generalists who must be prepared to teach every subject area in Kindergarten to Grade 6. The last year of the concurrent B.Ed. program is designed to prepare Primary/Junior teachers to handle all subject areas.

Junior/Intermediate Division
Students enrolling in the Junior/Intermediate program (Grades 4-10) are also generalists who will be taught to teach in all areas in those grades. However, in grades 7 to 10, there is often a “rotary system” where teachers are expected to teach one subject area to a number of different classes at the same or different grade levels. For example, in a large elemen¬tary school, the principal might want to hire one Science teacher for three Grade 7 classes and two Grade 8 classes.

For this reason, all Junior/Intermediate teachers need to be qualified as an expert in one subject area of their choice (eg. English, French, Geography, Health and Physical Education, History, Mathematics, Music- Instrumental, Music- Vocal, Native Studies, Religious Education, General Science). Therefore, students will specialize in one subject area in their undergraduate years (e.g. English Literature) and then take one additional course (the “teach¬able” or “elective”) during the final education year which will provide them with in-depth knowledge as to how to teach their subject specialty to intermediate-aged pupils. In order to qualify for an “elective,” teacher candidates must have taken 18 credits (3 full courses) in the subject during their undergraduate years (initial degree).
Students who hope to go on and teach in the Senior division (grades 11-12) must be an expert in one subject area, which must be a “teachable” subject in the senior high school curriculum (with 30 undergraduate credits in the first teachable (5 full courses). Such students might also take 18 credits in a second “teachable” area to qualify later on for another teachable in the Senior Division. Students should keep this fact in mind during their undergraduate years when choosing a specialization and optional courses.

The B.Ed. is offered in conjunction with:
• Bachelor of Arts (General)
• Bachelor of Arts (Honours)
• Bachelor of Science (General)
• Bachelor of Science (Honours)
• Bachelor of Physical and Health Education (Honours)
- Sport and Physical Education
- Outdoor Adventure Leadership
- Health Promotion

Academic standing
A student is considered to be in good standing when all of the following criteria are met:
1) Fulfils all conditions of admission
2) Achieves a cumulative average of at least 75% for entrance into the Professional Year. This is calculated using the following format:

                A) For an honours Degree:
                    Years 1 + 2 = 25% weight
                    Years 3 + 4 = 75% weight

                B) For a 3 year undergraduate Degree:
                    Years 1 = 33.3% weight
                    Years 2 = 33.3% weight
                    Years 3 = 33.3% weight

1) Meets all requirements of the initial degree program
2) Meets all of the EDUC requirements thus far in Concurrent program

Policy on Grade Point Cutoff in Year #1 of Concurrent Education:
The GPA cutoff for Year #1 of the Concurrent Education Program is 70%. If you have just finished First Year and have a GPA that is between 70% -74.4% a meeting needs to be held to confirm your plans for bettering your GPA.

Under no circumstances will anyone be allowed into the Professional Year without a cumulative GPA of 75%.
