General information
The Department of Sociology offers programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The course SOCI 1015 - Understanding Society with a minimum grade of 60%, is a prerequisite for registration in all other sociology courses. In exceptional circumstances, this or any other prerequisite, may be waived with permission of department chair.
As a general rule, 3rd- and 4th-year courses require a significantly higher level of involvement of the student in the learning process than do 1st- and 2nd-year courses. Upper-year students are expected to demonstrate a capacity for independent thinking and research. The teaching methods and assignments for these courses reflect this expectation.
The degree programs are designed to respond to a variety of different needs. The general (3-year) program consists of a basic foundation in sociology with some specialization available through additional sociology courses.
The specialized (4-year) program is designed to provide a strong foundation in sociological theory and research methodology in conjunction with specialized study in one or more sub-fields of sociology. The research and teaching interests of faculty members address issues such as globalization, gender and other bases of inequality within the following areas of focus: family, health, socialization, and labour studies.
A number of the department’s courses serve as key offerings in interdisciplinary programs like the Family Life Studies and Human Sexuality Certificate, the Law and Justice program, and the certificate or degree in Labour Studies. The department also offers an M.A. in Applied Sociological Research, and participates in the interdisciplinary M.A. in Human Development.
Students graduating with a 4-year B.A. in Sociology with a B+ average (75%) are admissible to both programs.
