Laurent Lavoie – Alumni Award of Distinction
Born in Chapleau and raised in a Franco-Ontarian family in Sudbury, Laurent Lavoie has distinguished himself by playing a role in bringing to light the Acadian cause. In 1963, he received a bachelor of arts from Laurentian University, then pursued graduate studies at Laval University. In 1970, he obtained a Ph.D. in French literature from the University of Aix-Marseille.

During his 40 years as a professor, Laurent was able to pass on his passion for the French language and was a pioneer of Acadian literature studies, a field that was starting to take shape at the beginning of his career. But he wasn’t content with only spreading the knowledge he acquired at Laurentian University. He taught in Saskatchewan and New Brunswick and, upon his arrival in Nova Scotia, was defending his constitutional rights as a Francophone in a minority environment, mainly the right to an education in French, such as he’d had the privilege of receiving back home. He fought for his rights and those of his fellow citizens all the way to the Ontario Court of Appeals. He won the case Lavoie vs. Nova Scotia and the Board of Education of Cape Breton District, which is now a model for other causes of this nature across Canada. To recognize his hard work and efforts in Acadia, Laurent was awarded the Léger Comeau certificate and medal, in October 2005.

Officially retired from the University of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, in 2007, he continues to work in this institution, where he has taught French language and literature courses since 1974.

Laurent has shown great perseverance, which makes him a role model for the Acadian community and the community at large. He has proven how important it is to stand up for one’s convictions and values.

Darryl Boynton – Alumni Young leader Award
Darryl was born and raised just outside of Orangeville, and studied within the Sports Administration Program where he graduated in 2003. Shortly after completing his degree at Laurentian, Darryl quickly became an active alumnus by becoming the founding President of the SPAD Alumni Chapter, leading the Chapter through a period of growth and success, highlighted by the hosting of the 35th Anniversary of the SPAD program, the largest alumni event in Laurentian University history.

During his tenure as Chapter President, Darryl has also addressed convocation, donated merchandise, time and resources to the SPAD program and events.

Aside from his continued support for the SPAD program and Laurentian University, Darryl joined the Canadian Hockey League after graduating from Laurentian where he was the Manager of Marketing and Events from May, 2003 – May 2005. At this time, he has accepted a position as the Manager of Hockey Canada’s Ontario Regional Centre in Toronto. In this role, Darryl works with Hockey Canada as well as all of Ontario’s provincial associations on development projects including hockey schools and clinics for players across the province.

According to Dr. Norm O’Reilly, who nominated his former student, Darryl has “shown leadership, organization skills and marketing ability far beyond his years.  His future in the sport business is very bright and he will soon join the long list of successful SPAD alumni making a difference in sport in Canada and around the world.”

Allison King – Student Recognition Award
Allison King completed her Honours Bachelor of Commerce in Sports Administration this spring and excelled not only in her studies, but also in her university involvement.

Allison was the outgoing President of the SPAD student council and the recipient of the 2007-2008 SPAD Bursary.

She has dedicated many hours to promoting the SPAD program by organizing lectures events and helming Frosh Week events for new SPAD students and participated as a Laurentian Voyageur Game Day staff. Allison also took a leadership role in organising the 35th Anniversary of SPAD and was a research assistant with the Institute of Sport Marketing (ISM).  Her love of organising events has led her to volunteer her time and expertise with the Diabetes Association for Sudbury Rocks! Run, Race or Walk for Diabetes, by organizing intramural basketball games to raise money for cancer and successfully running two 20+team hockey tournaments.

Building professionally on her organizational skills, Allison took on an internship with Tennis Canada, where she assisted with the sponsorship and promotion of the Rogers Cup in Toronto.

Since her graduation from Laurentian in 2009, Allison has not slowed down. She is currently working towards becoming part of the Olympic movement in Vancouver for 2010
