The prehistoric and historic roots of sickness and medicine are examined in this course. Topics covered include paleopathology; epidemiological transitions; diseases of colonisation; the history of major epidemics and public health; emergent and re-emergent diseases; historic background to understand Western medical culture and practices; and historic sketches of homeopathy, Chinese medicine, Ayurvedic medicine and other healing traditions.
