Teaching Assistants Policy

ANTRHOPOLOGY STUDENTS

Policy on the assignment of Teaching Assistants in the Anthropology Department at Laurentian University

The budget for teaching assistants is limited and frequently the department is only notified of the budget after the term has begun.

Courses that have higher enrolment and/or laboratory components have priority with respect to assignment of teaching assistant hours because these courses require greater time investment in marking and set-up and take down before and after class.

After the chair has received notification from the dean’s office of the budget for T.A.s he or she will ask faculty members to make requests for T.A. hours. Faculty members will do so using the attached requisition form. The chair will approve the requests and return the forms with the assigned number of hours. The chair shall distribute the hours in an equitable fashion, keeping in mind that courses with higher enrolment and/or laboratory components have higher priority for disbursement of T.A. funding.

Faculty members shall not promise T.A. positions or a certain number of hours to students in advance of the chair announcing the distribution of hours. In the event that a faculty member does make such commitments, if that faculty member wishes to fulfill such a promise she or he shall do so from her or his own funds (grants or professional allocation).

Faculty members shall not promise work-study positions to students until such positions have been approved by the work-study office. In the event that a work-study position is approved and the department has not received funds from the dean, the faculty member is responsible for payment of the 25% commitment from the faculty member’s own funds.

The department is under no obligation to fulfill promises made to students by faculty.

Faculty supervisors are responsible for making T.A.s aware of the procedures for submission of payroll forms.
