Research Interests:

Joe Hamr obtained his M.Sc. in Zoology at the University of Guelph and a Ph.D. in Wildlife Ecology at the University of Innsbruck, Austria. After his studies, he worked as a wildlife biologist with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources Research Section from 1985 to 1989. From 1986 to 1991, he also lectured and supervised research in the Department of Biology at Laurentian University.

Joe currently holds positions of Director, Northern Environmental Heritage Institute at Cambrian College, Adjunct Professor in the Department of Biology at Laurentian University, Associate Graduate Faculty in the Zoology Department at the University of Guelph and Conjunct Professor in the Watershed Ecosystems graduate studies program at Trent University. During the past 25 years, he has conducted and supervised research on ungulate ecology in the Austrian Alps and the Precambrian Shield of Central Ontario. He participated in the remnant elk population research that was instrumental in initiating the Ontario Elk Restoration Project in 1997. Other studies have included urban nuisance bear behavior and control, the feasibility of wild-turkey introduction in central Ontario, the impact of wolf predation on introduced elk and population surveys of reptilian species of concern in the Sudbury District.
