Congratulations to the following graduate students who successfully defended their theses:
Dorothy Brown (M.Sc. - March 16) - Population demographics of problem black bears (Ursus americanus) in Central Ontario in relation to cancellation of the spring bear hunt (supervised by Dr. F. Mallory and Dr. J. Hamr)
Andrew Bennett (M.Sc. - April 16) - Density-based consensus clustering in ecology (supervised by Dr. M. Anand)
Seminars
On March 9, Dr Greg Ross, Associate Dean of Research at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, presented an enlightening seminar entitled "Metal ion contamination and Parkinson’s disease: Exploring the role of the environment using a novel aquatic model." He was invited by Dr. Joe Shorthouse.
Dr Wilfried Haerty (Postdoc, McMaster University, Hamilton, ON) visited the Department on March 16 and presented a seminar entitled "Comparison of gene expression between Drosophila melanogaster subgroup species and their hybrids." Dr. Haerty was invited by Dr. T. Merritt and co-hosted with the Dept. of Chemistry and Biochemistry.
Dr. Ben Evans (McMaster University, Hamilton, ON) talked about "Testing alternative demographic scenarios of sympatric species: Implications for biodiversity conservation in Indonesia" when he visited the Department on March 30. Dr. Evans was invited by Dr. Tom Merritt.
Other Activities
2007 Annual Ontario Biology Day
Thirty-seven senior undergraduates, along with 3 faculty members, from Laurentian’s Biology Department attended the 20th Annual Ontario Biology Day Conference held March 17 and 18 at McMaster University. During the two-day venue, students from 13 Ontario Universities presented more than 165 talks or posters outlining their research projects undertaken. The Laurentian group (below) enjoy a final few moments before boarding the coach for the return trip.
