Undergraduate programs are available in both English and French. The General Program and the Specialized Program have a common first year that consists of 6 credits each of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics, and 6 credits from the Social Sciences or Humanities. Bachelor of Science 3-year (General Program)
The General Program is a 3-year program for students requiring a background in Science with a concentration in Biology. Students must complete 42 credits of Biology, and should consult the Academic Calendar or communicate with an Academic Advisor concerning required and elective courses.
Bachelor of Science 4-year (Specialized Program)
The Specialized Program is a 4-year program for students preparing for careers in Biology. Students must choose one of the following four specializations before commencing their second year:
Biomedical Biology (current curriculum)
Ecology (new)
Restoration Biology (new)
Zoology (new)
or complete a Major in Biology.
Students should consult the program's Academic Advisor concerning required and optional courses. Many students in this program choose to do our research/thesis course, which is an excellent preparation for graduate school.
Please note that the requirement for an Honours Bachelor of Science degree is a 70% average in the best 60 BIOL credits in the chosen specialization.
Major in Biology
Students in programs outside the Department of Biology who are interested in developing an undergraduate degree with more than one focus can complete a Major in Biology. Specifically, students may wish to build an interdisciplinary degree bridging the humanities, social sciences, engineering, or other fields with biology for future professional school/training or employment. This Major in Biology will allow these students to successfully meet their objectives.
Minor in Biology
Students in programs outside the Department of Biology who are interested in developing an undergraduate degree with more than one focus can complete a Minor in Biology. Bachelor of Science (General Program - Combined)
The Bachelor of Science (General Program - combined) is a 3-year program in which students must complete 24 credits in Biology and 18 credits in another science. Students should consult with a Biology Academic Advisor concerning required and elective courses.
Bachelor of Science (Specialized Program - Combined)
The Bachelor of Science (Specialized Program - Combined) is a 4-year program in which students must complete 54 credits in Biology and 27 credits in another science. Students should consult the respective Biology Academic Advisor concerning required and elective courses.
Bachelor of Arts (General Program - Combined)
The Bachelor of Arts (General Program - Combined) is a 3-year program for students requiring a general background in Biology and an Arts subject. Students must complete 30 credits of Biology and 30 credits in the Arts subject. Students should consult an Academic Advisor in each subject matter concerning required and elective courses.
Bachelor of Arts (Specialized Program - Combined)
The Bachelor of Arts (Specialized Program - Combined) is a 4-year program for students requiring a specialized background in Biology and and Arts subject. Students must complete 42 credits of Biology and 42 credits in the Arts subject. Students should consult an Academic Advisor in each subject matter concerning required and elective courses.
Qualifying Year
The qualifying year is a one-year program (30 credits) for students with a 3-year degree who wish to qualify for graduate school or upgrade their teaching credentials. Students should consult an Academic Advisor to select an appropriate suite of courses.
Honours Diploma in Biology
The Honours Diploma in Biology is designed for students who have a 3-year B.Sc. in Biology from Laurentian, with a minimum average of 70% in all Biology courses, and who wish to pursue a full year of further study at the honours level. Students with an appropriate 3-year degree from another institution can consult with the chair about their eligibility.
Certificate in Environmental Biology
The Certificate in Environmental Biology is given to those students who complete 30 credits of undergraduate courses in Environmental Biology. The certificate can be taken as part of a full-time or part-time Biology program, or as a special student.
