Core Courses
DEVE 5000 E - Thesis
DEVE 5005 E - Major Paper
DEVE 5106 E - Theoretical Perspectives in Human Development
A review of various theoretical frameworks that are current in the study of human behaviour and the understanding of human ontogenesis. The discussion will take note of their strengths and weaknesses, their view on the construction of theories of human development and the formulation of relevant research hypotheses. The course will cover theories of growth and maturation, learning, cognitive development and socialization. Attention will also be given to historical and cross-cultural perspectives. (cr 3)
DEVE 5206 E - Methodology and Research Techniques in Human Development
An examination of methodologies for the description and explanation of sociological, psychological and physical changes across the life-course will be made. The logic and interpretation of univariate and multivariate designs appropriate to human development research will be applied. The performance and interpretation of computer analysis will be integrated into the course. (cr 3)
DEVE 5306 E - Age Span
This seminar course will have two elements. First, primarily through student investigation, the course will describe major components of developmental change emphasizing the period from conception to the senior years. Second, lifespan developmental issues will be presented for discussion by a cross section of the program faculty. (cr 3)
Discipline-based 3-credit courses
At least six courses will be offered each year from among the following discipline-based half courses.
DEVE 5416 E - Patterns of Movement in Children
The structural and functional basis of movement in children will be examined by the methods of mechanics. Typical and atypical body segment parameters and temporal, kinematic and kinetic patterns of movement for the basic skills, including locomotion, will be analysed. The course includes laboratory work. (cr 3)
DEVE 5426 E - Health of the Canadian Population
Selection of topics in health and hygiene related to the Canadian people. This includes common health problems due to heredity and environmental impacts (physical, chemical, biological, societal). Interpretation of the concepts of well-being, health promotion and prevention strategies at the various age levels. (cr 3)
DEVE 5436 E - Physical Growth of Children
The focus will be on anthropometric and anatomic changes in relation to: performance abilities, growth and maturational age trends; individual and sex differences. The course
includes laboratory work. cr 3
DEVE 5446 E - Ramifications of Physical Activity on Health, Fitness and Performance across the Life Span
This course will deal with physiological changes which occur under typical and enriched environmental stimuli for physical activity. Special consideration will be given to the functioning of the cardiovascular, respiratory and neuro-muscular systems. The course may include laboratory work. (cr 3)
DEVE 5456 EA - Lifespan Perspective of Human Perceptual-Motor Behaviour
This course deals with perceptual-motor behaviour both as a product of and as a causal agent for lifespan development. Explanations for change in perceptual-motor behaviour,
including motor control, and the implications of such change will be discussed. The course will be run using a seminar format. (cr 3)
DEVE 5486 E - Current Topics in Human Physical Development
This seminar course will cover topics having relevance to human physical and physiological development, but which are not covered in any of the specialized elective courses in this area. Topics may include changes in structure and function or variables which contribute to the development and realization of motor function. (cr 3)
DEVE 5616 E - Psychodiagnosis and Assessment of Children
Developmental, intellectual, behavioural and emotional assessment of the child (including interviewing, observing and testing). Administration, scoring and interpretation of various instruments. Communication of results to children, parents and professionals. (cr 3)
DEVE 5626 E - Child Psychotherapy
Goals, methods, modalities and techniques in child psychotherapy. Major theoretical approaches and schools of thought. Research in child psychotherapy. (cr 3)
DEVE 5636 E - Recent Developments in Child Psychology
A seminar course to review recent developments in child psychology and related fields. (cr 3)
DEVE 5646 E - Special Topics in Human Development Psychology
A seminar course on a special pertinent topic or field for which appropriate personnel are available. (cr 3)
DEVE 5656 E - Learning Disorders (including Speech and Language Disorders) in Children
The nature of learning disorders (including speech and language disorders) in children, their causes, their psychodiagnosis and an introduction to their treatment. (cr 3)
DEVE 5666 E - Psychological Disorders of Childhood and Adolescence
Diverse theories of childhood disorders and their attempted reconciliation will be presented. The classification, description and causation of psychological disorders of childhood and adolescence, including those pertinent to mental retardation will be reviewed within a develop
mental framework. Learning and language disabilities, neuroses, psychoses and personality and conduct disorders will be examined. (cr 3)

Review of theoretical perspectives on formal educational systems, their assumptions and their implications for human development. (cr 3)
DEVE 5836 E - The Social Development of Reasoning
A survey of research about the effects of different social configurations on the development of patterns of reasoning in the child. Special attention will be paid to the relative importance of family, peer group and educational influences in different social class and cultural contexts. (cr 3)
DEVE 5846 E - Sociology of Language
This course examines language as a factor and consequence of social relationships in a developmental perspective. It gives particular attention to the causes and effects of the different ways of producing and communicating information. (cr 3)
