SUDBURY FAMILIES MOBILISE IN SUPPORT OF LAURENTIAN UNIVERSITY

SUDBURY, ON (April 26, 2011) – Laurentian University launched the Sudbury Families initiative within its Next 50 Campaign at an event in this institution’s rotunda this morning.

The Sudbury Families initiative is a focused campaign that celebrates and honours prominent families of the City of Greater Sudbury and engages them in the university’s mission. "The Next 50 Campaign is all about driving creativity, innovation and prosperity," said Scott McDonald, chair of the Next 50 Campaign. "These exceptional local families and community builders, through their hard work, perseverance, and vision, have truly embodied the spirit of the Sudbury Families initiative within our campaign."

Sudbury Families initiative co-chairs Dario Zulich, John Pollesel and Perry Dellelce expressed pride in leading the initiative.

"As a graduate of Laurentian I am pleased to be able to offer my support to the university" said Pollesel, chief operating officer, Vale Base Metals North Atlantic. "Laurentian’s 43,000 graduates are following in the footsteps of the individuals and families that we are celebrating through this initiative. Laurentian alumni are the entrepreneurs and professionals that continue to ensure that our businesses and community thrive."

Dellelce, managing partner of Wildeboer Dellelce LLP, spoke about the importance of the role that the university plays in sustaining the city’s growth amidst changing social and economic climates. He goes on to say, "this in turn is what these families of entrepreneurs have done to make Sudbury the prosperous community it has become."

Zulich, president and chief executive officer of TESC said, "although I’m not a graduate of Laurentian University, I am a proud resident of Sudbury, as are the members of my family. This initiative isn’t just about supporting an educational institution—it’s also about taking pride in the community, remembering its roots, and recognizing success."

The three co-chairs proudly announced at the event, that $2,600,000 has already been raised towards this campaign from the first twelve families invited to participate.

Laurentian’s president and vice-chancellor Dominic Giroux thanked the co-chairs for their passion for the city and the university. "The Next 50 Campaign and Sudbury Families are key to Laurentian’s plans for the future. They will help ensure that members of the Greater Sudbury community are engaged in the university and supportive of its vision moving forward" said Giroux.

Benefactors invited to participate through the Sudbury Families initiative, and who invest a minimum of $50,000, will receive special recognition from the university. A limited edition booklet will be produced highlighting the accomplishments of these families. Their names will also be added to prominent plaques on the main Sudbury campus, as well as the future site of the Laurentian School of Architecture.
