How does the New Residence affect our chances of getting a spot in the complex?
We are quite excited to have this addition to the complex. In years past, we unfortunately had a void for second year students, as we are required to keep a number of rooms available for 1st year students in UC and SSR, while West Residence was reserved for students with 60+ credits. EFFECTIVE THIS ACADEMIC YEAR, West Residence will be open to students who possess 30 credits (2nd year and higher), while the New Residence will accept students with 60 credits (3rd year and higher. The opening New Residence effectively creates an additional 236 beds on campus.
Why does the application ask me to put first and second choice of residence?
We always try to accommodate you in your first choice. Due to the volume of applications, though, it is not always possible to offer you a spot in your first choice. If you are offered your second choice, it is because we are only able to offer you a spot in that residence. Occasionally, you may receive an offer to a residence that you didn’t even apply to. You may choose to decline that offer and be placed back into the draw for your first choice, but realize that in doing so, you may or may not get a subsequent offer.
What is meant by Substance Free environment?
This year’s application offers the option of suggesting you would like to live in a substance-free environment. This refers specifically to your preference to abstain from the use of alcohol, tobacco and drugs. (The illegal use of any drugs is a violation of our community standards, and is dealt with severely) If you are selected to live in the complex, we will endeavour to place you in an apartment or floor with like-minded students. PLEASE NOTE that the University cannot guarantee, nor do we make any promises to enforce this commitment, and that the decision to select this option is indicative of a preference only.
What is the deadline for applications?
Applications may be received at any time, however, for returning and upper year students, applications must be received by our office by on the at 11:59pm on the 3rd of February, 2012 to be considered for the first-round of offers.
If you do not qualify for the building(s) you have listed as your 1st and/or 2nd choice, the Residence Office reserves the right to switch your first choice to an appropriate alternate building.
When can I expect to hear back about my application?
First round selections will be held the following week for UC, SSR, WEST, New Residence and MSR, and the results of this process will be posted on the 17th of February, 2012 by 4pm in the window of the Residence Office. An email will also be sent to the selected students providing more details about room selections and deposit dates. This process will determine the majority of spots in the complex for the following year. Subsequent offers will be made upon determination of availability.
IF YOUR NAME IS SELECTED please consult your offer email for details regarding the time and date of your selection. ALL FEES on your student account MUST BE PAID IN FULL before paying your deposit. Failure to do so may void your offer of residence. There will be a $500 NON-REFUNDABLE deposit due on the date specified in your email. Details on paying your deposit will be provided in your offer email. Room selections will be held on the date and time indicated in your offer email.
It is important that you check your email. We also prefer that you use your Laurentian email account, as we have (although rarely) encountered problems with Spam filters on hotmail, gmail and yahoo accounts.
What happens with my deposit?
Your deposit will be applied towards all outstanding fees first, so it is imperative that you payoff any balances prior to making your deposit. The deposit breakdown is $100 towards a caution fee (this will be refunded to you at the end of the school year, usually in June, if there are no damages to your room, floor or complex) $50 (New Residence) or $75(University College, Single Student and West Residences) towards your yearly activity fee, and the remainder towards your residence fees. PLEASE NOTE THAT DEPOSITS ARE NON-REFUNDABLE: the only exception being if you are not accepted into your program by the University.
I want a single room. How do I get one?
There are only a limited number of single rooms in University College and Single Student Residence. These are reserved for 2nd and upper year students, specific medical conditions and various staff positions. This will usually only be determined on room selection day. Occasionally, a single room will become available during the summer. You will be notified of any change when we send out roommate information during the summer.
When will I find out the names of my roommates?
In early August, we send packages to every resident. In the packages, you will receive information and forms that will need to be completed for when you arrive. You will also receive a list of the people in your apartment or on your floor. If a name is blacked-out, it is because the student didn’t consent to sharing their name.
When am I allowed to move in to Residence?
Move in day for the school year is the Saturday of the Labour Day weekend. Early move-ins will not generally be permitted.
With no offer to live in residence, what are my options?
You have options left. You can apply in person to one of the federated residences (Huntington, Thorneloe or Lucien Matte Residence at the University of Sudbury). You may also choose to visit the Off-Campus Housing office on the 2nd floor of the Parker building, or at their website at http://ocho.laurentian.ca. Off-campus housing’s mandate is assist you find appropriate and affordable residence off the Laurentian site. We do ask, however, that if you should find another place to live, that you send us a quick email to residences@laurentian.ca to let us know that you are no longer require a spot in residence.
It is still possible to get an offer, though it will only be done should a spot become available. Offers can be made right up to the first week of school. Usually, after the first week of school, should you still require a place to live, you should contact us to let us know that your application should remain active.
