SAMSSA provides “Industry Partnership” scholarships to 2 Laurentian University eBusiness students

On Wednesday March 14th SAMSSA will award its first academic scholarships to Laurentian University eBusiness Science students, Eric Anderson and Kevin Dellaire. The “Industry Partnership” scholarships have been established to reward students who have demonstrated excellence in academics and in their involvement in mining supply and service industry technology adoption projects.

Laurentian University’s eBusiness Science Programme now offers a “Technology Adoption Advantage” curriculum that places teams of  students in industry throughout the students’ four year degree. Teams are matched with an industry partner where they work towards making recommendations on how to use technology to make business process improvements.

The educational model, the first of its kind in Canada, is based on industry practise of Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve and Control. Students in each of their years will work on one of the project elements and have the opportunity during their 3rd year to make improvements through an internship with the industry partner.

Throughout their degree the students will have completed a full technology adoption project,  essentially completed a 4 year interview process with their industry partner and be in an excellent position for full-time employment with the company.  An excellent study, stay and succeed strategy.

This educational model was conceived by Kirk Petroski, senior consultant of G1 Global a local technology and consulting company.

Petroski was contracted by the EBusiness Programme in 2005 to assist in the development and look for methods to increase enrolment.

“The ability to leverage established industry relationships with SAMSSA and its members, and knowledge of Six Sigma’s DMAIC model set an excellent context for the development of the TA adoption curriculum and projects” says Petroski.

“The feedback from the students enrolled in the new curriculum has been nothing but positive” says Petroski.

Award winner Kevin Dellaire says “The program’s curriculum is composed of many learning tools. However it is the Technology Adoption Advantage courses which I have taken that really puts the pieces together. I am able to incorporate both my commerce and computer skills simultaneously in relation with the working industry”

Feedback like this will go a long way in increasing awareness and enrolment” Petroski says.

Kevin and his team have been partnered with Bestech, a leading mining service company in Sudbury. Their project is a web based control system to assist in underground mining ventilation systems.

Two other industry partners are Carriere Industrial Supply, manufacturer of wear solutions for the mining industry and Fuller Industrial, manufacturer of rubber lining products.

“The success of the industry partnerships to date really comes down to collaboration and support of SAMSSA. SAMSSA has successfully identified itself as an “access hub” of mining supply and service excellence, with access to these companies the success of the Technology Adoption Advantage will continue to grow” say Petroski.

Dick DeStefano, Executive Director of SAMSSA said; "This innovative program was a natural fit between the University and industry.  SAMSSA is excited to be working with students with this level of expertise who may eventually stay and work in our mining supply and service industry"
