Our mineralogist, Dr. Andy McDonald, continues to discover new minerals, two in 2009, four in 2010, and one so far in 2011, bringing the total of new minerals that he has discovered or co-discovered to 19. Read more to see a list of the discovered minerals. Well done Andy!

Thanks to the many of you who dropped by the MERC/DES booth at PDAC and attended the hugely successful Alumni Reception. The reception was attended by many people, who came to catch up with each other and to hear about recent initiatives in the Department, MERC, and LU by DES Chairman Dan Kontak, MERC Director Michael Lesher, and LU President Dominic Giroux.

Earth Sciences NSERC Award Winners
Six DES students were supported by prestigious NSERC scholarships in 2010-2011. Michael Babechuk, Michal Kolaj, Robert Lodge, Kristina Skeries, and Joe Petrus held NSERC Alexander Graham Bell scholarships, Caroline Mealin was supported by a NSERC PGS-D scholarship, and Edward Nelles held a NSERC IPS scholarship. The NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Awards were awarded to Tiffany Chevrier, Sarah Jackson-Brown, and Sonia Lateigne. Please join us in congratulating them for their achievements!
Earth Science Club Receives Financial Contribution From Dr. Don Rousell

Dr. Don Rousell handed over a cheque for $2,000 to Mike Tucker, president of the Laurentian University, Earth Sciences Club. The funds which came from the production of the OGS Open File Report 6243, "A Field Guide to the Geology of Sudbury, Ontario", will be used to support student field trips and events.
Students and professionals attended a Co-Op B.Sc. Workshop for a preparation course about the APGO professional practice and ethics (PPE) exam to be presented by Mr. Yungwirth on Saturday and Sunday March 27-28. This is free for students.
