The location of Laurentian University in Sudbury offers ready access to a wide variety of geological environments embracing Archean volcanic and sedimentary belts, a Proterozoic sedimentary/volcanic belt, Grenville metamorphic terrains, and lower to middle Paleozoic sequences. This wide diversity of geological environments offers excellent opportunities for studies in economic geology, mineralogy, igneous and metamorphic petrology, stratigraphy, paleoecology, sedimentation, and structural geology. The Department offers graduate programs focusing on topics related to Precambrian mineral deposits, Archean greenstone belts, Southern Province geology (Huronian), and Paleozoic biostratigraphy-paleontology.
