Research Interests
Current research interests focus on close collaboration with the local mining industry and lie in the areas of flexible mining systems, rapid development, quality control, decision analysis, underground mine planning, deep mining, risk management in mine feasibility, and mining community relations in order to ensure the sustainability of an operation though productivity enhancements and assessment of bottom line issues. Sources of funding for research include the mining industry, NSERC and Laurentian University. Dr. Kazakidis is the author of approximately 80 scientific publication and technical reports pertaining to underground mining. Currently, Dr. Kazakidis is the principal investigator in a Discovery and a CRD NSERC grant
He collaborates with MIT, Université de Laval, and the Luleå University of Technology in Sweden.
Information for Prospective Students
Prospective students with an interest in pursuing graduate studies are encouraged to contact Dr. Kazakidis directly via email and provide their CV and a short description of their interests in conducting research. Funding is currently available to qualifying applicants in Canada and around the world with a background in mining, mechanical, industrial or process engineering, along with those in operations management, who have a strong commitment towards providing balanced solutions to address the acute challenges the mineral resource sector is faced with. The graduate student is expected to interact with industrial partners as part of his/her research work and make presentations to conferences, universities and research sponsors. Full time MASc students are expected to complete their degree in 24 months, while Ph.D. students in 42 months on average.
