Dr. Sharan's research interests are in computational mechanics, numerical modelling in rock mechanics, dynamic analysis of fluid-structure systems and finite element modelling. He has authored more than 50 papers in refereed journals and conference proceedings in the areas of computational geomechanics, structural mechanics, fracture mechanics, fluid mechanics, fluid-structure dynamic interactions and the finite element method. He has chaired several sessions at national and international conferences.
He is the Faculty Advisor of the Professional Engineers of Ontario Student Membership Program and a member of the Senate Committee on Student Appeals. He has served as the Acting Director of the School, Chairperson of Graduate Program Development Committee, Chairperson of the Selection Committee for the School’s Director and member of the Faculty Personnel Committee, the Academic Senate and various Senate Committees including Curriculum Committee, Occupational Health and Safety Committee, Admissions Promotions and Requests Committee and Undergraduate Awards Committee. He has also served as a Director of the Sudbury Chapter of Professional Engineers of Ontario.
Dr. Sharan has received awards from Laurentian University Engineering Students Society for outstanding teaching performance, from Deans of Science and Engineering for excellence in teaching and research and from the Ministry of Citizenship & Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Recreation of Ontario for volunteer service.
In 1989, Dr. Sharan was promoted to the rank of Full Professor. Prior to joining Laurentian University in 1981, he was a faculty member at the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi and Universidade Estadual de Maringa, Brazil . He has also worked as a Visiting Professor at the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi during his sabbatical leaves.
Dr. Sharan received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Waterloo, Masters degrees from Queen's University, Kingston and the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur and B.Sc. ( Eng. ) degree in civil engineering from Bihar University. In 1996, he was elected to the Fellow grade of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
