Understanding Course Numbers and Codes
Example: PSYC-1105-EL-02

The 4-letter code indicates the department, school, or subject:

PSYC = Psychology

The four numbers designate the course: PSYC 1105.

The first digit indicates the year in which a course is normally taken:

  • Courses beginning with '1' indicate first year level courses
  • Courses beginning with '2' indicate second year level courses
  • Courses beginning with '3' indicate third year level courses
  • Courses beginning with '4' indicate fourth year level courses
  • Courses beginning with '5' or '6' indicate graduate level courses

PSYC 1105 = a first year Psychology course

The last digit indicates the course credit:

  • Courses ending in '1', '2', '6', or '7' have a credit value of 3
  • Courses ending in '0' or '5' have a credit value of 6  
  • Courses ending in '8' have a credit value of 1
  • Courses ending in '9' have a credit value of 1.5
  • Courses ending in '4' have varying credit value

PSYC 1105 = a 6-credit, first year Psychology course

The first letter indicates the language of instruction:

  • 'E' for courses taught in English
  • 'F' for courses taught in French
  • 'N' for courses taught in another language (Italian, German, Spanish, etc.)

PSYC 1105 E =  a 6-credit first year Psychology course taught in English

The second letter indicates the campus where a course is offered:

  • 'L' for courses taught through Laurentian University (Sudbury)
  • 'G' for courses taught through Laurentian@Georgian (Barrie or Orillia)
  • 'A' for courses taught through Algoma University College (Sault Ste Marie)
  • 'H' for courses taught through le Collège Universitaire de Hearst

PSYC 1105 EL = a 6-credit first year Psychology course taught in English through the Laurentian (Sudbury) Campus.

Sometimes, a third letter appears.  An additional 'L' indicates a lab:

BIOL 1506 ELL 01

If your course requires lab work make sure you rigister for a lab session and timetable it appropriately.

The last 2 numbers indicate the particular section of a given course:

  • 01, 02, 03, etc. for on campus courses
  • 10, 20, 30 etc. for Envision courses

PSYC 1105 EL 02 = the second section of a 6-credit first year Psychology course taught in English at the Laurentian (Sudbury) Campus.

Often a course is offered at more than one time and by a different professor.  Make sure that you register for the proper section (time and place).
