Understanding Credits

At Laurentian University, courses are normally taught as full courses (6 credits) or as half-courses (3 credits).  There are some exceptions (such as 1.5 and 9 credit courses).

In the Winter Session (September to April):

  • a typical 6-credit course begins in September and ends in April
  • a typical 3-credit course begins in September and ends in December or begins in January and ends in April

A student taking a 100% course load in a BA or a BSc program would typically take 30 credits between September and April.  These 30 cretits can be in the form of 6-credit courses, 3-credit courses, or a combination of both.

A balanced schedule (equal weight in the first and second term) might look like this:

September
December
January
April
6 credit course -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------->
6 credit course -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------->
6 credit course -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------->
3 credit course -------------------------------------------------------> 3 credit course -------------------------------------------------->
3 credit course -------------------------------------------------------> 3 credit course -------------------------------------------------->

Normally, a course is taught at a rate of 3 hours per week (plus labs and tutorials):

  • 3 meetings per week of 1 hour each (actual presentation time: 50 minutes)
  • 2 meetings per week of 90 minutes each (actual presentation time: 75 minutes), or
  • 1 three-hour meeting per week  (actual presentation time: 2 1/2 hours)

It is recommended that for every hour spend in class, students invest one to two hours outside of class to prepare.  With this formula, a full course load (5 courses at 3 hours each = 15 hours / week) quickly becomes a 30 to 45 hour / week commitment.  This is equivalent to a full time job.  If university studies are approached in this manner, success is sure to follow.

In the Spring Session (May to July) the timetable is compressed and follows a different schedule:

  • a typical 6-credit course begins in May and ends in July
  • a typical 3-credit course begins in May and ends in mid-June or begins in mid-June and ends in July
