MUSC2056 Music & Popular Culture I (3 Credits)
This course examines some of the principal forms of North American popular music since the late 19th century: ragtime, blues, jazz, swing, music hall, Tin Pan Alley and the musical. Also provides an overview of all of these styles from a Canadian perspective.
MUSC2057 Music & Popular Culture II (3 Credits)
This course examines the origins and development of rock and roll into the 1980s, and looks at the new developments in electronic instruments, country, folk music and Canadian popular music from both the English and French perspectives.
MUSC2256 Elementary School Music I (3 Credits)
This course offers strategies that are relevant, meaningful and practical providing learning experiences about program, instruction and assessment and evaluation appropriate for use in the primary elementary school classroom. Special emphasis is placed on exploring repertoire suitable to children in the lower grades, and focuses upon their needs and interests. Topics include skills for developing proper vocal placement and beginning singing technique as well as ear training, sight singing, conducting, beginning theory and integrated activities for fostering music appreciation. Philosophical perspectives of music education and music teaching methods that are relevant to the primary child will also be studied.
MUSC2257 Elementary School Music II (3 Credits)
This course explores the language of music and offers activities and teaching strategies appropriate for the development of musical understanding and skills in the primary grades. Special emphasis is placed on exploring repertoire and materials suitable for children in the lower grades. Topics include development of vocal techniques, music notation and theory, conducting, understanding of a musical score, assessment and evaluation as well as music appreciation, use of Orff instruments, world music and integration of music with language arts. Philosophical perspectives of music education and music teaching methods that are relevant to the primary child will also be studied.
