Health Services - Health Insurance

The Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP)

The Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) covers the cost of hospitalization and physicians' services (with the exception of third party billing  e.g. pre-employment physical exam, notes, medical forms, record transfers, medical/legal reports and Ministry of Transportation physical exam).

The Ontario Ministry of Health has assigned a health card to all residents of Ontario. You should have this card with you at all times when presenting yourself to Health Services.

If you are from Ontario and you do not have your card, a Health Number Release form should be completed. If your card is expired, you will be asked to pay in advance for services required. You will be reimbursed when you present your new card. This new card will have a version code which is one or two letters added to your numerical OHIP number. All previous cards should be destroyed as they are no longer valid.

Students from other Canadian provinces are generally covered by their home province. If they have moved to Ontario, they should apply for an Ontario Health Insurance number within 30 days of their arrival in Ontario.

International students and their families receive the same coverage through UHIP (University Health Insurance Plan).

Students who participate in athletic activities are advised to have extra insurance coverage.

Information on accident and disability insurance is available through the Health Services' office or if you prefer you can access the insurance website at
Industrial Alliance Pacific
