Occupational Health and Safety - WHMIS Contact Information
WHMIS Training

One of the three essential elements of the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) is the worker education program. By law, the employer must provide information and instruction to all workers who work with, or near a controlled product. This means that the employer must provide training to:

Ø  anyone who stores, handles, uses of disposes of the product;

Ø  anyone who immediately supervises another worker who performs the above duties; and

Ø  anyone whose health and safety could be at risk during storage, handling, use or disposal of a controlled
product; during maintenance activities; or during emergencies such as spills.

WHMIS

All staff members of the University community must receive initial WHMIS training. If an employee is unable to

attend one of the sessions, a WHMIS-training CD is available for loan from the Occupational Health and Safety Office

WHMIS Training is available through Desire2learn. Email gbenoit@laurentian.ca to register.

WHMIS Refresher

In addition, staff will be offered refresher courses every five years.

GHS is soon coming to Canada:

GHS stands for the "Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals". The goal is that the same set of rules for classifying hazards, and the same format and content for labels and safety data sheets (SDS) will be adopted and used around the world.
