RESEARCH INTERESTS
The questions I pursue in my research are those of religious ethics, religion and politics, and the philosophy of religion, especially within the western tradition. Much of my published work has focused on literary texts (e.g. Dostoevsky, Kafka, Camus) as a rich source for reflection on problems of faith and atheism, evil and suffering, compassion and violence. My most recent book (Redeeming the Enlightenment) addresses the contemporary debate about the role of religion in contemporary secular society by examining the religious-moral sources of modern equality, tolerance, authenticity, and compassion.
In addition to teaching in the M.A. Humanities, I am Chair of Religious Studies (Thorneloe College) and a member of the faculty in the Ph.D Human Studies.
