Sociology is one of the related fields known as the social sciences. They are called social sciences because they share a common interest: human behaviour. The focus of sociology is the study of human groups.
What do Sociologists do?
Sociologists study the processes and pattern of human relations.
Some sociologist focus their study on the patterns of face-to-face interactions in small groups. They look at life close-up. Others concentrate on larger groups, even whole societies.
Social life is very complex and sociologists have developed many years of analysis. They study, among other things: social movements, work, the family, communications, culture, and minorities.

For further information on admission to Laurentian University, please consult the undergraduate Calendar.
The Department of Sociology welcomes students who:
- would like to understand society and its multitude of groups both at home and in the world;
- would like to take up the challenge of academic work;
- enjoy working with theories and statistics;
- are willing to look at the world with new eyes.
Because our program places considerable emphasis on the scientific practice of sociology, we encourage students to have one mathematics course among their Ontario Academic Courses (OAC).
