The Web interface for the Boojum Research Virtual Library allows mining and environmental researchers to view a Google map that shows the location of Boojum’s projects in Canada and the U.S. Using embedded hyperlinks included with each project’s metadata, researchers can also directly access and display the environmental reports for the site or project, most of which are available in full text as Adobe PDF files. Mine developers and international researchers thus have the ability to study the rehabilitation history for a specific mine site.

Navigation Instructions for Project Map
For each mine site for which Boojum Research performed environmental assessments and implemented remediation projects, a “teardrop” is displayed on a Google satellite map image of Canada and the United States. To zoom in or out, and view areas of the map in more detail, move the sliding cursor box up or down the +/- scale at the left of the map. You may also use the directional cursors at the top to move the display in any direction.
Click on a “teardrop” to display the metadata for each mine site. For each site, four categories of information are displayed: the project name; the nearest geographical location for the mine, such as a river, lake, or city; the company or agency that either owned the mine when remediation work was done, or commissioned Boojum’s research; and the date range for Boojum Research’s work at the site.
Both the project name and the company name are hyperlinks that search the catalogue of the Mining Environment Database, and display all the Boojum technical reports associated with the selected site. Some project or company hyperlinks will retrieve only one technical report, as Boojum Research may have completed only one environmental assessment for that site.
To display the map, you must have one of the following Internet browsers: Internet Explorer (versions 6.0 and above), Firefox Mozilla (versions), or Safari (version 1.3.2 and above). Javascript is also required to view the map. If your browser does not support Javascript, a text version of the three indexes is also available.
Project Index
The project index is an alphabetical listing by the most commonly used name for each mine site at which Boojum Research completed remediation research. The list of projects appears to the right of the map. Clicking on a project name link opens a pop-up on the map at the project’s location, and displays the metadata for the mine site. Within the metadata pop-up, the project name is a hyperlink to the Database catalogue, and retrieves all Boojum reports for the selected mine site name.
Active mines frequently change ownership, when the developer is purchased by, or merges with, another company. In addition, several environmental consulting firms may be contracted by the mine owner to submit rehabilitation plans for one site. The project index is intended to act as a common access point to retrieve all environmental assessments completed for a mine throughout its production history, regardless of its ownership history or the name of the consulting firm.
You can view the text version of the project index, sorted alphabetically by project name. Select a project name hyperlink to display associated Boojum reports from the Database.
Company Index
The company index lists the owner of the mine at the time the environmental assessment and remediation work were completed. Click on a company name from the list at the right of the map to display the pop-up and metadata. The company name is a hyperlink to the Database catalogue for all Boojum reports associated with the company.
Links to reports carried out for previous and new owners of a mine provide an historical perspective on the environmental problems or hazards discovered at the site, and the techniques used in rehabilitation. For different mines owned by the same company, this index also provides links to technical reports that illustrate both the range of environmental problems that can occur at an abandoned mine, and the need to customize a remediation plan for the site.
A text version of the company index is also available.
Geographic Index
The geographic index lists in alphabetic order the city, town, lake or river nearest to the reclaimed mine site. Choosing a term from the index displays the “teardrop” and the site metadata, with hyperlinks to the Database by company and project names. Geographic locations are not indexed in the Database.
A text version of the geographic index is also available.
