The Mineral Exploration Research Centre (MERC) and the Department of Earth Sciences (DES) at Laurentian University in Sudbury have initiated a long-term research program to take a new, modern look at the Sudbury Structure. The program will involve geological, geophysical, and structural mapping of igneous, volcanic, and metamorphic host rocks, country rocks, and ores, including a wide variety of spectacular impact breccias, with subsequent petrographic, mineralogical, geochemical, petrological, and isotopic studies. We invite applications from outstanding students and recent PhDs with a keen interest in any of the above fields to apply for several MSc, PhD, and post-doctoral fellowships in the program. MERC Research Initiatives
Establish an NSERC IRC in Exploration Geophysics. Develop new techniques for the direct detection of deep mine/camp resources, and to better image and assess resources at depth within the deep mine environment. $1.35M in funding raised from industry and eligible for matching funding from NSERC and CEMI. Search for Chair is in progress.
Develop new Collaborative Research Project on Mantle Metals and Crustal Concentration Processes. First phase will focus on traditional and non-traditional ore environments at Sudbury. Emphasis will be on the role of hydrothermal fluids in mobilizing PGE and the development of new ore deposit types.
Establish an NSERC IRC in Exploration Geochemistry. Emphasis will be on the development of exploration techniques for base metals, gold and diamond discovery in glaciated terranes.
Develop additional Collaborative Research Projects in:
Au-rich VMS, Orogenic Au, and Diamonds.
