Computer Science Degrees

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science offers various options for major, concentration, and minors in Computer Science 3 and 4 year degrees in either Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or Bachelor of Sciences (B. Sc.). The department also offers a specialized 4 year degree in computer science, Bachelor of Computer Science (B. COSC). The options are listed below.

Difference between a B.A. and a B.Sc. Degree

The difference between a B.A. and a B.Sc. degree is in the selection of elective courses.

  • For a 3 year B.A.degree a student must take at least 36 credits in Humanities and Social Science courses.
  • For a 4 year B.A.degree a student must take at least 42 credits in Humanities and Social Science courses.
  • For a B.Sc. degree a student must take at least 18 credits from three different science subjects and at least 12 credits in Humanities and Social Science courses.
  • For a B.Sc. degree a student must include PHYS 1006, PHYS 1007, and CHMI 1006 (CHMI 1041 can be taken in place of CHMI 1006 for students without grade 12 4U Chemistry)

Admission Requirements

Ontario Secondary Schools

  • Advanced Functions
  • 1 other grade 12 4U Mathematics course (Calculus & Vectors strongly recommended)
  • 1 grade 12 4U English
  • 3 other grade 12 4U/M courses* (Computer Science recommended)

* must include 1 grade 12 4U science if enrolling in B.Sc. program

Students having less than 60% in either Advanced Functions or Calculus & Vectors must take MATH 1911 and/or MATH 1912 but will not retain credits for these courses.

General Information

  1. Students wishing to concentrate in Computer Science will not be allowed credit for MATH 1911 or 1912
  2. When selecting courses, students should pay particular attention to the prerequisites for courses they may wish to take in later years.
  3. Students in the 4-year specialized program should seriously consider including MATH electives (beginning with MATH 1036, 1037, 1057) in their program so that they have a wider range of third and fourth year COSC-courses available to them. This advice is particularly important for those students who anticipate pursuing graduate studies.
