Conference at Laurentian University on the lives of Italian Canadians

On Friday, March 26, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., a conference entitled "After the Age of Immigration: The Lives of Italian Canadians," organized by the Italian Section of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, will take place in Laurentian University's Governor's Lounge, R.D. Parker Building. Admission is free. The Sudbury community and the media are invited to attend.

The conference is the third in a series of major events dedicated to the Italian-Canadian experience to be presented at Laurentian University. In 1997, the main theme was the 500th anniversary of the landing of Giovanni Caboto in Canada. In 2000, with the generous support of the Millennium Bureau of Canada, a second conference was organized on the historical presence of the Italians in the Sudbury area. For the 2004 conference the focus will be the achievements of the Italian-Canadian community as expressed through the lives of individuals from different sectors of Canadian society.

The conference, After the Age of Immigration: The Lives of Italian Canadians, will touch upon a number of topics, including the experience of public life, culture, the creative arts, publishing and education. While previous conferences dealt with the various phases of the influx of Italians into Canada, this year the focus will be on the experiences of Italian Canadians after the period of immigration. The overarching theme is ones own life and what it means to the individual and to the community.

There will two eminent keynote speakers: Commissioner Giuliano Zaccardelli, RCMP; and the Honourable Maurizio Bevilacqua, M.P. King-Vaughan-Aurora. Other distinguished speakers who will be discussing how their Italian heritage has influenced their professional lives include: Maria Coletta McLean, author of My Father Came from Italy; Rosanna Battigelli, local author and educator; Dennis Castellan, local architect and artist; Nic Battigelli, local author and educator; Anthony Mollica, professor emeritus of Education, Brock University and editor of Soleil Publishing Inc.; Sonia Del Missier, Vice-President, Academic, Cambrian College; Michael Lettieri, professor of Italian, University of Toronto at Mississauga and director, Scuola Italiana, Middlebury College, Middlebury, Vermont; Marcel Danesi, professor of Anthropology and Italian Linguistics, University of Toronto. In addition, there will be a book display featuring materials on language teaching and Italian Canadiana.

The conference and its related activities are made possible with the generous support of Laurentian University's Vice-President, Academic (Anglophone Affairs), Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and Department of Modern Languages and Literatures.
