DOZ Exchange

Laurentian and DOZ-Dolmetscherschule Zürich

About the University of Zurich

The institution (DOZ-Dolmetschershule Zürich) has just been officially approved as a department (Applied Linguistics) in the new University of Zurich at Winterthur.  The degrees and courses will finally be recognized everywhere as university level. This takes effect in the 1999/2000 academic year, meaning that there will be a number of changes of interest to Laurentian students which should bring the DOZ programs more in line with Laurentian`s own study programs. DOZ students will be doing a full year abroad, at Laurentian University, meaning the period from mid-October to mid-July, similar to the academic schedules of other universities in Switzerland. The first semester at DOZ is approximately mid-October to about February 20th while the summer semester is from mid-March to about mid-July of each year.

Courses available at DOZ

Laurentian students can select university-level courses in Architecture, Engineering, Business, as well as Translation and Language Theory.  There may also be some general service courses such as Art History.

The Language courses offered are as follows:  Intensive German (a placement test will be given to determine level of language proficiency) as well as French, Spanish, Italian and Translation courses in English.

German skills required

For the non-DOZ courses (Business and Engineering) a HIGH level is required because there are exclusively native speakers attending the classes in these schools.

For students interested in the language courses, it is recommended that they have completed a minimum of "Intermediate German", or the Laurentian course DEUT 2005.
