What Can I Do With A Degree In Biology?

The Department of Biology offers a General three year and a Specialized four program.  Though each leads to a Bachelor of Science degree, the four year program is designed for students who wish to specialize in a particular area and/or may be considering graduate studies.  A Certificate in Environmental Biology is also open to students who complete 30 credits in Environmental Biology.  Finally, the department offers a Master of Science program and a Ph.D. in Boreal Ecology.  All programs are offered in English and French.  Please see the link below for further information on Specialized Biology options, program details, and course descriptions.

Skills developed:  

  • Awareness of the biological basis of plant and human development
  • Familiarity with laboratory procedures and experimental techniques
  • Ability for precise, detail-intensive work
  • Strong knowledge of statistics and related software
  • The ability to make projections from existing data    
  • Heightened ability to use and develop models to problem solve
  • Knowledge of complimentary disciplines like physics and chemistry

Areas of employment

Depending on the avenue of specialization biology graduates can expect to work in government and industry in areas like research and development, the biomedical sciences, health care, conservation, and education.  Laurentian graduates have found careers as environmental technicians, biologists, professors, teachers, researchers and more.  In Canada a significant portion of graduates find careers as Medical Technologists and Technicians.

Work prospects

In Canada the average rate of employment for those with an undergraduate degree in biology is 82% two years after entry into the work force.  The average yearly earnings nationwide with this degree is approximately $29,800.  However pay varies greatly with location, specialization, and level of experience.  Job satisfaction among graduates is roughly 88%, while 74% would choose to make the same educational choice again.

Work prospects are fair.  Competition among new graduates is expected to be average with a majority of occupations to be found in health services.
