What Can I Do With A Degree In Classical Studies?



Through the affiliated Universities, the Department of Classical Studies offers a three year Bachelor of Arts degree which may be taken as a single or in combined concentration.   A 30 credit Certificate in Classical Studies is also available to students who are not taking a concentration in the classics.  Please see the department link below for further information on programs and course descriptions.

Skills developed:

  • Excellent communication skills (interpersonal, reading, writing, presentation)
  • Understanding of modern culture, of its origins, and within historical context
  • Appreciation of cultural diversity
  • Familiarity with great works of literature and art
  • Ability to professionally edit and proofread material
  • Strong critical thinking and analytical abilities
  • Attentiveness to detail and appreciation of aesthetics

Areas of employment

Depending on the area of concentration graduates can expect to work in government and industry in areas like the arts, communications, education, and law. Students of the Classics tend to have superior communication skills making them ideal candidates for employment in management, human resources, and public relations.  Laurentian graduates have found careers in teaching, administration, security, and more.

Classical Studies undergraduates qualify for employment in entry level positions in business, government, the non profit sector, and teaching.

Graduate studies are necessary for careers in law, counseling, ethics, medicine and related areas.

Ph.D. is generally required for teaching at the university or college level

Students should consider combining their Classics degree with other disciplines such as Anthropology, History, English, and Religion to increase their marketability following graduation.
