What Can I Do With A Degree In Engineering?



The School Engineering offers programs in Chemical, Mechanical, and Mining Engineering all leading to Bachelor of Engineering degrees.  Programs are four years unless students choose a five year cooperative education option which includes paid work-term placements in industry.   Further options are available in each division depending on the area of interest.  The School also offers a two-year partial program in Civil Engineering.  Master’s and PhD programs are available.  Please see the department link below for further information.

Skills developed:  

  • Strong knowledge of science and mathematics (especially in relation to physics)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Attentiveness to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to visualize three dimensional drawings from two dimensional prints
  • Sketching/drawing ability
  • Experience with industry software

Areas of employment

Occupations vary according to the area of specialty chosen and level of education achieved.  In Canada, a majority of undergraduates can expect to work as civil, mechanical, or chemical engineers.  Many former Laurentian students now work as mining engineers, chemical engineers, metallurgists, consultants, researchers, and more.    Further options are available to those who choose to complete the Master's program in Mineral Resources Engineering as well as to graduates of the Ph.D. program in Natural Resources Engineering.

Work prospects

Laurentian Engineering undergraduates have a 100% employment rate six months after entry into the workforce.  The average yearly earnings of undergraduate engineers in Canada is approximately $50,000. Earnings increase with a Masters or PhD as well as with experience.  Approximately 95% of graduates claim job satisfaction, while 83% would choose to make the same educational choice again.  Competition among new graduates is expected to be average with most opportunities to be found in civil, mechanical, electrical, and chemical engineering.
