What Can I Do With A Degree In Geology?



The Department of Earth Sciences offers three and four year Bachelor of Science degrees in Geology.  The three year B.S.c is designed for students who intend to work in areas like Education, Geography, Economics, Business Administration and so forth.  The four year B.S.c. is for those intending graduate studies or careers as geologists in mineral exploration, the mining industry/government agencies, or the petroleum industry. The four year program qualifies students for registration with the Association of Professional Geologists of Ontario.  Masters and Ph.D. programs are also available.  Please see the department link below for further details on programs and course descriptions.

Skills developed:

  • Field and laboratory experience
  • Multidisciplinary training in earth processes (chemistry, physics, & biology)
  • Familiarity with quantitative methods of analysis and related software
  • Ability to analyze, summarize, and present information critically
  • Multidisciplinary approach in the design and analysis of problem solving
  • Understanding of environmental issues (conservation, policy, economics)
  • Registry as a professional geologist
Areas of employment

Geology graduates can anticipate careers in areas related to resource management, mapping, mineral analysis, and education.  In Canada roughly a third of graduates are employed as physical science professionals.  A minority find employment in technical writing, translating and public relations.  Others work in the technical occupations of the physical sciences.

Work prospects

Graduates of the of the physical sciences at Laurentian attain a 100% employment rate six months after entry into the work force.  In Canada the average yearly earnings for those with a Geology degree is approximately $37,800.  However salaries vary significantly according to area of specialization, location, and general work experience.  Approximately 88% of graduates claim job satisfaction, while 87% would choose to make the same education choice again.

Competition among new graduates is expected to be average with the majority of competition coming from graduates in Geography, Physics and Chemistry.
