What Can I Do With A Degree In Nursing?



The Laurentian University School of Nursing offers undergraduate and post graduate studies which include a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, a Master of Science in Nursing, and a Ph.D. in Rural and Northern Health.  An array of programs for Registered Nurses is also available, some of which may be taken through distance education.  Students have the opportunity to work with physicians, dieticians, physiotherapists, and members of other health-care disciplines.

Clinical nursing placements are available in leading north-eastern Ontario health-care centers and agencies, all accessible from campus.  Courses are available in both French and English.  Please see the department link below for further details.

  • Knowledge of ethical practice, counseling, and conflict resolution
  • Strong communication skills (written, spoken, and interpersonal)

  • Practical hands on experience in the field

Areas of employment

Nursing graduates qualify for employment in areas like staff nursing, public health, government service, and independent practice.  In Canada 87% of graduates become Nursing Supervisors or registered Nurses.  Other areas of employment include international health and research.

Work prospects

The employment rate for Laurentian Nursing graduates is 100% six months after entry into the work force.  In Canada the average yearly earnings for those with an undergraduate Nursing degree is approximately $45,700.  However pay varies with location, specialization, and level of experience.  Job satisfaction among graduates is roughly 92%, while 80% would choose to make the same educational choice again.

Work prospects are good and competition among new graduates is expected to be below average.  Most opportunities will be found as nursing supervisors and as registered nurses.
