DEIRDRA McCRACKEN (2004), NEXT GREAT PRIME MINISTER

In February 2006, Deirdra McCracken won the Next Great Prime Minister Award, the top prize in a competition for young Canadians.  Former Prime Minister, the Right Honorable Brian Mulroney, presented Deirdra with a cheque for $50,000.  In the final stage of the competition, which was televised on the national CTV network, four former prime ministers judged the performance of the five finalists (including Deirdra) who had been selected from among the hundreds of initial applicants.

Since then, Deirdra completed an MA in science politique at Université Laval and is now Press Secretary to the Minister of Industry , The Honorable Jim Prentice, in Ottawa.

"While Laurentian University allowed me to ‘stay home’ to pursue my studies in political science, I can say with a degree of certainty that many of my former classmates from out of town would agree that this academic institution can quickly become a home away from home for anyone.  My professors’ doors were always open - a luxury not enjoyed at all universitiesThe open-door policy that simplified asking questions or even engaging in a discussion did not only apply to professors whose classes I took, but to all of those in the department.  A bonus of Laurentian’s political science department was the choice to study in either of our country's two official languages.  This offered more choice to students not only of courses, but also of professors, which made for a very well rounded experience. The department also offers study abroad programs, an opportunity which I gladly seized.  A year at the University of Limerick in Ireland was the perfect finish to my Bachelor of Arts degree; I was immersed in Irish and European culture and politics and was able to offer a Canadian perspective to tutorial discussions and papers.  I also had the opportunity to participate in the American-European summer academy held near Bregenz, Austria as the only Canadian selected to attend.  This too was a program promoted by the Political Science department, namely Christiane Rabier, then Chair of the department, who felt it was a great opportunity for students to take part in three weeks of intense debate and study.  During both of those experiences, it was great to put Laurentian University on the map.  I would be remiss if I did not mention the "fun" enjoyed amidst the study.  Laurentian's Political Science department offers students something that only one other university in Canada does : Model Parliament.  The impact of this event can certainly be measured by the fact that Alumni gathered in the House of Commons in January 2007 for another go at what could be the official sport of "political junkies".  Education is not merely what we learn through lectures and textbooks.  Studying political science at Laurentian University is proof of that."

AARON MARSAW (1996), RHODES SCHOLAR

In 1996, Aaron Marsaw was named Laurentian University's first Rhodes Scholar. Every year, only eleven Canadian citizens are awarded a Rhodes Scholarship. As a result, after his B.A. in Political Science, he went to study at Oxford University (Great Britain) where he completed his Master degree in Latin American Studies. In 1998, after being awarded the prestigious Newton Rowell Scholarship, he went to study at the University of Toronto.

"When I look back to my studies in Political Science at Laurentian University, I believe those were some of the best years of my educational career. I decided to pursue a specialisation in Political Science, in order to develop my critical thinking skills, and in particular, in order to develop a critical perspective with respect to politics. At the Political Science Department of Laurentian University, I especially enjoyed the small size of classes, the opportunity to take courses in both official languages, and the one on one rapport I developed with faculty. Currently, I am completing my second year of Law at the University of Toronto. Now, more than ever before, I draw on my undergraduate Political Science experiences in order to enhance my perspective on legal issues."

RICK SLEAVER (1990)

Rick Sleaver is Principal of The Panache Group Inc. in Sudbury, Ontario, a virtual communication and development firm.

"During my time at Laurentian, the faculty in Political Science was second to none. Coupled with the smaller class size, this made Poli Sci one of the most exciting and stimulating programs at the University. I am pleased to count several of the faculty members as long term friends, and enjoy continuing to discuss politics with them on a regular basis."

GORDON QUAIATTINI (1990)

Gordon Quaiattini is President of The Wellington Strategy Group Inc. in Ottawa, Ontario.

"The faculty members of the Department of Political Science at Laurentian University are some of the very best professors and researchers within Canada. They are hands-on and provide a learning experience that is second to none."

ALEX BAUMANN (1989)

Alex Baumann is executive director of Road to Excellence, Canada's Summer Olympic initiative.  While studying at the Department of Political Science, Alex Baumann was an outstanding swimmer at the international level. Among his achievements, he won six World Records and two Gold Medals at the Los Angeles Olympics. Alex was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Laurentian University in 1996.

"My time at Laurentian and specifically within the Department of Political Science will always be remembered as a time of growth (both intellectually and emotionally). I must admit that it took me longer (than most) to finish my degree due to other commitments. In hindsight, however, I think that this was a good thing because it made me realize how important lifelong education is. And even though I do not work in a field related to political science, I have found that the skills that I taught at Laurentian have been useful in all positions I have held in the last decade."
