Past or present, LU students have something to say...   Andreas Luek

I completed my M.Sc. of Chemical Sciences in 2005 at Laurentian University.  Following my defense I received a one year FedNor Youth Internship which gave me the opportunity to gather experience as a research technician in Dr. Louis Mercier’s laboratory.  In addition, since 2004 I’ve been an instructor for the Princeton Review to teach organic chemistry and general chemistry portions of the MCAT prep course.  Now I’m fully employed as a technologist for the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and in charge of instrumental chemistry. My favourite hobbies include playing poker and shooting my bow and arrows.

I am in my third year of the Ph.D. program in Mineral Deposits and Precambrian Geology. My project focuses on reconstructing the environment of emplacement of an ancient submarine volcano and its associated massive copper and zinc deposits in Flin Flon, Manitoba.

I spent the first three summers of my project mapping the rocks in my field area. This experience has not only taught me important geological skills with respect to research and exploration within existing mining areas, but has also made me aware of the intimate relationship that Laurentian University has with the mining industry and both federal and provincial governments.

My project is assisted both financially and logistically by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, the Manitoba Geological Survey, and HudBay Minerals, and allows for collaborative efforts and learning experiences that would not be possible otherwise.

I look forward to my final year of studies here at Laurentian and the possibilities of a career within the mining industry, government surveys, or academia that have opened to me during my studies.

For the last year I have been working towards a PhD in Boreal Ecology.

I came to Sudbury from Germany, where I studied Marine Environmental Sciences. I chose to study at Laurentian University because I liked the fact that I would have the opportunity to work and live in the environment that I would study.

My research interest is the relative importance of benthic and pelagic energy sources in food webs of recovering lakes. This focuses on how food webs work in lakes, what the driving factors are, and what the limiting factors for food web development are.

Studying in Sudbury, with its numerous lakes, has provided me with the opportunity to research food web ecology in the lakes right on my doorstep. As an Environmental Scientist, the environmental recovery and re-greening that Sudbury has undergone adds even more interesting aspects to my education and work.

Right now, I am planning my first field season. I will work closely with the Cooperative Freshwater Ecology Unit.
