Admissions

READY FOR PART TIME STUDIES?

When do you want to start?

You should first determine when you would like to begin your studies before you apply for admission.  The academic year is September to April. Spring/Summer Session runs from May to July and courses are condensed into 11 weeks. I do not recommend starting at this time because the time frame is to short. I recommend the academic year to begin and taking one course only just to get a feel of what is required in a distance education course.  All fields in social work are demanding and if you have a family and you have to take care of yourself too, I recommend one course first, just to break yourself in. Then if you feel you can handle two, then register for two the next academic term.

Applying for Admission to the University

Once you have determined when you want to start, then what you have to do is apply for admissions to the university.  You can obtain the Application for Admissions at the Laurentian website at www.laurentian.ca .  Once there, perform an alphabetical search. Once there, go to "C" and look for the “Centre for Continuing Education for Distance Education”. Once there, look to the left side of the screen and you will see five additional links.  The third one is “Admission or Readmission” right click on this.  A page will mysteriously appear.  Read the body of the text and you will see another link for Admission Form.  Click on “Admission Form” and you will see a shaded box with “Adobe Acrobat Forms” and click on Admission Form.  Once the Form pops up, you can print it up, fill it in and fax it in.  If you have trouble finding it, then you can email me a fax number and I can fax you an application.  It is important that you familiarize yourself with the internet because once you have been admitted to the university you will have to do everything on-line.

When you obtain the application it is important that you send the original transcripts with the application along with the application fees.  If all the required information is in one package, your application can be processed.

Transfer Credits from a College of Applied Arts and Technology (CAAT)

If you are submitting a transcript from a community college, you will then receive a Transfer Equivalency Report from the Office of Admissions based on the Grade Point Average (GPA) of your College of Applied Arts and Technology (CAAT) Diploma transcripts.    If the GPA is 3.2 or better, you may receive a 30 credit transfer if the diploma is compatible to Native Human Services.  Transfers usually only apply to first year for our program unless there is a formal articulation in place. If the GPA is under 3.2, then you may receive an eighteen credit transfer in first year or you may just be offered admission to the first year.  Therefore, it is important to submit original transcript to determine course transfer.  Once the office of admissions determines transferability, the office of admissions will send you a Transfer Equivalency Report.

Once you receive the Transfer Equivalency Report (TER), you contact our office by faxing us a copy of the TER at 705-675-4817 or by calling the office and providing your student number, then we can proceed to advise on what courses to register for. Please take note that it takes approximately 6 to 8 weeks to process an application so allow for ample time before the actual start date of the term in which you wish to commence your studies because it takes time to get to the registration process as well in order to ensure you receive all course material on time. The Native Human Services program is only available on a Part Time basis through Distance Education through the Centre for Continuing Education.

For more information on Admissions, go to http://www.laurentian.ca/ .  When you get to the site, move your cursor to the top right hand corner of the screen and right click on “Quick Links”.  A drop down menu will mysteriously appear.  Move your cursor to “Admissions”.
