Annie Wenger-Nabigon, RSW, RMFT, MSW, Ph.D.(c)

I was born in the mountains of northern Arkansas, USA, where my mother was a nurse-midwife, delivering medical care to isolated families. My parents were part of a small community of conservative Mennonites. Their involvement in early “Civil Rights” actions, although not framed as such, has had a lifelong formative impact on me.

I graduated from Lancaster Mennonite High School, PA (1969), from Goshen College, IN (1974), from the University of Michigan School Of Social Work, Ann Arbor, MI (1979), and am currently enrolled in the Interdisciplinary Ph.D. Program in Human Studies at Laurentian University, Sudbury, ON. My research focuses on a First Nation model of resilience from an extended family perspective. My previous teaching experiences have been at Laurentian University, and in delivering in-service trainings and workshops. I was also with Ohio University-Ironton, OH Branch (1986) teaching Introduction to Social Work, and Indiana Institute of Technology, Fort Wayne, IN (2006) teaching Introduction to Psychotherapy.

I worked as a Clinical Social Worker, Family Therapist, and Certified Sex Therapist in hospital and agency settings, and private practice in the U.S., specializing in working with people with severe mental illness (SMI), addictions, and trauma. I am a permanent resident of Canada, and am employed full-time with the “Raising the Spirit” Mental Wellness Team in Sudbury, ON, a pilot project serving 10 First Nations in the Sudbury-Manitoulin region. My husband, Professor Herbert Nabigon, and I live in Sudbury, ON, and together we have 4 adult children and 2 grandchildren.
