School of Native Human Services Field Education

Native Human Services Fieldwork Purpose and Objectives

The Native Human Services Honours Bachelor of Social Work programme is designed to provide students with a wide range of social work learning opportunities of which field education is an integral component.  In general, field education is standardized across the three existing Social Work programmes (Anglophone, Francophone and Native Human Services) although each programme operationalises them in ways that are consistent with the culture and experiences of their students and agencies.  The overall goal of the field education components are to provide opportunities to learn how to practice social work incorporating academic content and practice knowledge guided by the CASSW code of ethics.  Underpinning field education in Native Human Services is a highly regarded way for validating and claiming Native theories and methodologies in practice.  The Medicine Wheel is used as the framework to conceptualize helping from a Native perspective and is embraced by the Seven Grandfather Teachings which functions as the Native Code of Ethics (Native Human Services Field Education Manual, 2008).  The Native Human Services student therefore incorporates a bicultural competency (Native and Social Work) framework into their field education experiences and practice.
