NSWK 3605 E: FIELD INSTRUCTION I

 

This course involves planned and supervised learning experience in approved settings, through which classroom learning may be related to the realities of practice and professional development. All field students are required to journal and complete an agency profile assignment.  Students are required to attend field seminars. One Placement must be completed in a Native agency and one placement to be completed in a Non-Native agency.

 

PREREQ: completion of all 1st & 2nd year requirements, admission to professional years, plus NSWK 2315 & 3305 (may be taken concurrently). 6 cr.

 

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES - NSWK 3605 E - FIELD INSTRUCTION I

 

Students will demonstrate:

 

1.         An ability to meet the expectations that a social work setting has of a professional worker, understanding of and ethical adherence to service policies and implementation of policies as indicated in the Code of Ethics.

 

2.         A beginning ability to analyze the field education setting in terms of the agency’s structure, mandate and purposes, and its ability to implement that mandate and those purposes; in particular considering matters of client development and/or social control.

 

3.         A beginning ability to establish professional relationships with clients and with agencies.

 

4.         A beginning ability to use effectively the skills of interviewing and the ability to apply theories of social work practice in the study and assessment of a problem situation, and finally demonstrate an ability to record for purpose of study and learning in consultation.

 

5.         An understanding of the effective use of supervision, readiness to examine and critically evaluate his/her own work, and participate responsibly in supervision sessions.

 

6.         A beginning ability to recognize the importance of, and wherever possible be involved in the major types of interventions and the importance of research in social work.  Understand her/his commitment to the social issues.

 

 

Assignment:  Choose 2 of the above objectives.  Write a minimum of 3 pages relating the objectives to the agency experience.
