Carol is a Professor of Social Work, the MSW Program Coordinator and Director of the Centre for Research in Social Justice and Policy at Laurentian University. She is also the Director of a five-year research project, Poverty, Homelessness and Migration in Northern Ontario, a CURA funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council. Previously, Carol conducted a multi-year study on homelessness with the Social Planning Council of Sudbury, working with a network of more than 30 organizations serving poor and homeless people in Sudbury. In 2009, she completed a study of migratory and transient homelessness in Sudbury with the Social Planning Council of Sudbury. In addition to a focus on homelessness, her research interests in recent years have included girlhood, adolescence, and motherhood in northern communities. She has published many articles and reports dealing with homelessness and housing, racism, family issues, young mothers, parenting, postpartum depression, and child and family poverty in Sudbury and northern Ontario. Between 2003 and 2008, she completed a multi-year, province-wide and national project on girlhood. As part of this project she co-edited and published an anthology of girls’ creative writing and art, girlSpoken: from pen, brush and tongue, as well as a facilitator’s guide for teachers and service providers. The girlSpoken book has received an award from the Amelia Bloomer Project which is sponsored by the Feminist Task Force of the Social Responsibilities Round Table of the American Library Association.
