Department of Sociology

Students are advised to plan their program of study in consultation with an academic advisor. The course SOCI 1015 is prerequisite to all upper-year courses, unless it is waived by the department.

 

Bachelor of Arts in Sociology (4-year) - 120 credits

Specialization in Sociology (60 cr in SOCI or 54 cr inSOCI + 6 cr in ANTR)

The Bachelor of Arts in Sociology (4-year) can also be combined with a minor (24 credits) in another discipline.  Students must consult with the academic advisor of each department.

 

1st year

SOCI 1015 E - Understanding Society* (6 cr)

*Minimum grade of 60% required.

** Include 6 credits in Humanities and 6 credits in Sciences. Students who are planning to combine a minor should also include 6 credits in the minor requirements.


2nd year

SOCI 2016 E - Thinking Sociologically

SOCI 2017 E - Emergence of Sociological Theories
STAT 2126 E - Introduction to Statistics

SOCI 2127 E - Research Methods and Data Analysis*

*Minimum grade of 60% required.
**Students who are planning to combine a minor should also include courses in their minor requirements.

3rd year
SOCI 3005 E – Survey Research:  A course in Applied Sociology

SOCI 3016 E – Modern Sociological Theories:  Manifestations and Issues
SOCI 3126 E – Qualitative Methods

**Students who are planning to combine a minor should also include courses in their minor requirements.

 

4th year
SOCI courses at 4000 level (12 cr) **

+ SOCI courses (9 cr)

**Students are only permitted to take SOCI 4095 if they have a combined average of 75% or more in SOCI 3005, 3016 and 3126. Students who do not meet this requirement may retake courses to reach the required average or take 6 SOCI credits from the 4000 series in lieu of the thesis.

Maximum of 42 credits at the 1000 level (or 9100)

Maximum of 30 non-arts credits

Minimum overall average of 60% on best 24 credits of minor

Minimum overall average of 70% on best 60 credits of specialization is required for B.A. 4 Years Honours Degree.  If this average is less than 70%, student will be eligible to receive B.A. 4 Year Degree without the honours designation.
