ATHLETIC AWARDS

To qualify for athletic awards, applicants must be returning student-athletes and have achieved a min. 70% average in the previous academic year as a student-athlete.

Students must submit completed Application for Athletic Awards to the Student Awards Office, 1st floor, R.D. Parker Building. The Application for Athletic Awards can be printed using Adobe Acrobat. Also, please read the Athletic poster for further information.

The Sudbury Masters Running Club Award

Value: Variable (Preference to have the award split among more than one student). Recipient: an upper-year student, member of the cross-country running team or track and field team, on the basis of academic standing in the previous year and demonstrated financial need. The recipient must have resided in Ontario for 12 months prior to beginning university studies. Application for Athletic Awards required.

The Peter Ennis Memorial Bursary

Established by friends and family in memory of Peter Ennis, who, as head coach of the Lady Vees basketball team, brought it to 17 consecutive national championships. Value: up to $1,200. Recipient(s): one or more members of the Lady Vees basketball team, on the basis of academic standing in the previous year and demonstrated financial need. The recipient must have resided in Ontario for 12 months prior to beginning university studies. Selection is made on the recommendation of the Ennis family and the Student Awards Office. Application for Athletic Awards required.

The N.R.C.S. (Northern Rehabilitation and Consulting Services Inc.) Scholarships (2)

Value: $1,000/ea. Recipients: members of the men's basketball team registered as full-time undergraduate students, on the basis of academic standing in the previous year, and demonstrated leadership. Application for Athletic Awards required.

The Gino "Tepper" and Linda Caverson Scholarship

Value: $750. Recipient: a full-time undergraduate student who is a member of the University swim team, on the basis of academic standing in the previous year. Application for Athletic Awards required.

The Frederick Arthur "Wiggy" Walmesley Bursaries (4)

Established by the late Thelma V. Walmesley in memory of her brother Frederick Arthur "Wiggy." Value: $660/ea. Recipients: students entering the 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of any undergraduate program, on the basis of academic standing, financial need and participation in Interuni-versity Athletics. The recipient must have resided in Ontario for 12 months prior to beginning university studies. Application for Athletic Awards required.

The Joy Bellinger Memorial Scholarship

Established by the family and friends of the late Joy Bellinger, a cherished alumnae and former Lady Vees basketball star. Value: $600. Recipient: a female student entering the 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of a Bachelor of Physical Health Education who is a member of the Lady Vees basketball team, on the basis of academic standing in the previous year. Application for Athletic Awards required,

The F. Grant Henderson Bursary

Value: $500. Recipient: a member of the swim team registered in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of an undergraduate program, on the basis of financial need. The recipient must have resided in Ontario for 12 months prior to beginning university studies. Selection is based on the recommendation of the Student Awards Office. Application for Athletic Awards required.

The Joey Jerome Memorial Award

A gift from the family and friends in Sudbury and Ottawa of Joey Jerome (1964 -1986), a young man known and respected by his peers as one who went out of his way to be supportive and caring. Value: $500. Recipient: a full-time undergraduate student, on the basis of good academic standing, financial need and participation in Interuniversity Athletics. Selection is made on the recommendation of the Registrar. Application for Athletic Awards required.

The Max Silverman Memorial Scholarship

Established by friends, relatives and colleagues of the late Max Silverman to commemorate his accomplishments as a Sudbury businessman, sportsman and mayor. Value: $190. Recipient: a member of the Interuniversity Athletic Program who is registered in the 2nd or 3rd year of a Bachelor of Physical and Health Education on the basis of academic excellence. If no qualified applicant is found, the award may be given to a member registered in any program. Application for Athletic Awards required.

The Roman Baumann Memorial Scholarships (2)

Established by the friends and family of the late Roman Baumann, a former student who was admired for his academic and athletic abilities. Roman was a founding member of the swim club, was named Voyageur Athlete of the Year on three occasions, was an Ontario and Canadian University champion and represented Canada on the National Swimming Team. Value: $150/ea. Recipients: members of the swim team entering the 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of any program, based on academic standing in the previous year. Application for Athletic Awards required.

The Don Punch Memorial Award

Inaugurated by Joanne Derks and the Frank Bell family, and supported by Don Punch's family and friends, this award was established to help varsity athletes. As a former basketball player, CIAU and secondary school coach in Northern Ontario, Don's love of the game and concern for athletes is well documented. Value: $120. Recipient: a full-time undergraduate student on the basis of academic standing in the previous year at the University, participation in Interuniversity Athletics and demonstrated financial need. Preference is given to members of the men's and women's basketball teams. The award may be divided between two deserving students in the same year. Application for Athletic Awards required.

Dr. Dwayne Rivard Memorial Fund

Value: variable. Recipient(s): one or more members of the men's basketball team, on the basis of academic standing in the previous year, demonstrated financial need, demonstrated team leadership and a true Voyageur spirit. The student(s) must reside in Ontario, as defined by OSAP. Application for Athletic Awards required.

Joy Bellinger Bursary Fund

Established by Scott McConnell. Value: variable. Recipient: an upper-year student (min. 70% average), who is a member of the Lady Vees basketball team, has assisted in the program's recruiting effort, demonstrates financial need and is a resident of Ontario as defined by OSAP. Application for Athletic Awards required.

Clarke-Holla Athletics Bursaries

The Clarke-Holla Athletics Bursaries were established by Sharon Clarke, BA '91 and David Holla to provide financial assistance to Laurentian's student athletes. Application for Athletic Awards required.

Voyageur Men's Basketball Bursary

Established by Peter Helstrom and Virgil Hill of the Athletics Department. The recipient(s) must be a member of the Voyageurs men's basketball team. The bursary will be given to returning students, who can demonstrate financial need, and are residents of Ontario. Value is variable depending on number of recipients. Application for Athletic Awards required.

Voyageur Athletics Bursary

Established by alumni and friends of the Athletics Department. The award will be given to student athletes, who can demonstrate financial need. Application required. Value is $500 minimum.

Voyageur Men’s and Women’s Soccer Bursary

 

Established by the Department of Interuniversity Athletics, this bursary is awarded to aid a student of Laurentian University, who is a member of either the men’s or women’s University Soccer team.  Value is variable.  Application is required.

 

Dr. Dwayne Rivard Memorial Award

 

Established by family and friends, the Dr. Dwayne Rivard Memorial Fund will be awarded annually to one or more members of the Laurentian Voyageurs men’s basketball team, on the basis of academic standing in the previous year, demonstrated financial need, demonstrated team leadership and a true Voyageur spirit. The student(s) must be Ontario residents as defined by OSAP. Application is required. Value is variable.

 

The Bob Agnew Memorial Bursary

 

Established by Donna, Caitlin and Simon Agnew. Bob Agnew lived in Sudbury (Naughton) for 15 years where he obtained his Masters of Applied Science degree at Laurentian University while working at INCO.  In his free time, Bob enjoyed curling at the Idylwylde Golf and Country Club.  His Family created this bursary to benefit curlers enrolled at Laurentian University in honour of Bob's life as a curler and a student. This bursary is awarded to a Laurentian University student, who is a competitive curler.  Bursary application is required. Value is variable

The Benefit Partners/NRCS/Tony Evershed Award

Donated by Benefit Partners and Northern Rehabilitation and Consulting Services Inc. Value: $1,000. Recipient: member of the men's basketball team registered as full-time undergraduate students, on the basis of academic standing in the previous year, demonstrated leadership, financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Application for Athletic Awards required.

 

The Laurentian University Men’s Basketball Bursary

 

Established to support deserving students on the Laurentian University men’s basketball team to ensure athletes can excel both academically and on the court without the added burden of financial concerns.  Award recipients must meet CIS eligibility and AFA guidelines, be members of the Laurentian University Voyageurs men’s basketball team, be residents of the Province of Ontario and be able to demonstrate financial need.  The value of the award is variable.

The donor reserves the right to change the name of the award and the text describing the award should he at some point decide to remove his desire for anonymity.

 

The Ron Chrysler Bursary

 

“The Ron Chrysler Bursary.  The Ron Chrysler Bursary was created by friends and family in honour of Mr. Chrysler's retirement. Mr. Chrysler retired in June 2006 from his position as Vice President Administration at Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario. He is a Chartered Accountant by profession and was recently named Fellow of the Ontario Institute of Chartered Accountants. Mr. Chrysler served as the Secretary of the Board of Governors at Laurentian University from 1980-2006, and was past President of both the Council of Senior Administrative Officers of Ontario Universities and the Canadian Association of University Business Officers.

Mr. Chrysler has also served on the Board of the Northern Cancer Research Foundation, and the United Way of Canada. This bursary will be awarded to one returning female and one returning male athlete student enrolled at Laurentian University. The bursary will be awarded on the basis of participation in interuniversity athletics, demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP.   Award recipients must meet CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) eligibility and AFA (Athletic Financial Award) guidelines. Value is $500.  Application is required.

 

Smith Family Bursary

 

The “Smith Family Bursary. Established by the family, the purpose of this award is to provide financial assistance to aid a student of Laurentian University. The bursary will be awarded on the basis of participation in interuniversity athletics, demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP.  Award recipients must meet CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sort) eligibility and AFA (Athletic Financial Award) guidelines. Preference will be given to a student residing in the Sudbury area. Value is variable.  Application is required.

 

Swords Family Bursary

 

Established by family and friends.  The recipient must be a member of the Voyageurs men’s basketball team, meet CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport), and AFA (Athletic Financial Award) guidelines.  The Bursary will be awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP.  Value is variable.  Application is required.

 

The Swords Family Women’s Basketball Bursary

 

Established by family and friends. The recipient must be a member of the Voyageurs women’s basketball team and must meet CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) and AFA (Athletic Financial Award) guidelines. The recipient must be in good academic standing. The bursary will be awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Value is variable. Application is required.

 

Laurentian University Alumni Association / Lacroix Forest LLP/s.r.l. Athletic Scholarship

 

Established in 2009 in partnership between the Laurentian University Alumni Association (LUAA) and Lacroix Forest LLP/s.r.l. It is the first fully-funded athletic award at Laurentian University. Award recipient must meet CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport), OUA (Ontario University Athletics) eligibility,  AFA (Athletic Financial Award) guidelines, and be recommended by their Laurentian University coach and Laurentian University Director of Athletics.  Preference will be given to a student who is a graduate of a French language high school, and who is beginning the first year of studies at Laurentian University.  Value is variable.

 

LUAA-Alumni Association Athletic Scholarship

 

Laurentian University Alumni Association Scholarship was established by the Laurentian University Alumni Association (LUAA) in 2009. The award recipient must meet CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport), OUA (Ontario University Athletics) eligibility, AFA (Athletic Financial Award) guidelines, and be recommended by their Laurentian University coach and Laurentian University Director of Athletics.  Two awards will be given to one male athlete and one female athlete.  Value is variable.

Voyageur Men's Basketball Bursary

Ceming Family Laurentian University Bursary

 

Established by Jack, Maija, Jason and Tanja Ceming. The purpose of this bursary will be awarded to a student enrolled in any program at Laurentian University on the basis of participation in interuniversity athletics, demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Award recipient must meet CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) eligibility and AFA (Athletic Financial Award) and OUA (Ontario University Athletic) guidelines. Value is variable.  Application is required.

 

 

St-Aubin Ouellette Bursary for Student-Athletes

 

Established through planned giving, this award is presented to a student-athlete who is a member of the varsity sports program and receives a recommendation from the team coach as well as the director of Athletics. The student must meet all eligibility criteria for CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) and OUA (Ontario University Athletics) as well as guidelines for athletic bursaries.  The student must be registered full-time in any program, demonstrate financial need in accordance with criteria established by Laurentian University’s Student Awards Office, live in northern Ontario, and be a resident of Ontario as defined by OSAP.  Amount is variable. Application required.

 

Guy Dallaire Athletic Leadership Scholarship

 

Established by Mr. Chris Mercer to honour his late grandfather. Mr. Dallaire was a leader and believed firmly that positive character and leadership skills would be developed through athletic pursuits. The scholarship will be awarded to a participant in interuniversity athletics who has demonstrated positive leadership attributes. Award recipient must meet CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) and OUA (Ontario University Athletics) eligibility and AFA (Athletic Financial Award) guidelines. Value is variable. Application is required.

 

Giommi Family Scholarship

 

Established by Rick Giommi. This award is presented to a student-athlete who is a member of the men’s basketball varsity program. A recommendation from the team coach as well as the director of Athletics is required. The recipient must meet all eligibility criteria for CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) AFA (Athletic Financial Award). A recommendation from the team coach as well as the director of Athletics is required Value is $3,500.

 

Day Group Scholarship

 

Established by the Day Group. The award(s) is presented to a student-athlete(s) who are member(s) of the Laurentian University Voyageur Wrestling team. The recipient must be in good academic standing. A recommendation from the team coach as well as the Director of Athletics is required. The recipient(s) must meet all eligibility criteria for CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) and OUA (Ontario University Athletics) and AFA (Athletic Financial Award) guidelines. Application is required.

 

 

Lilly Family Athletic Scholarship

 

Established by the Charles James Lilly. The award(s) is presented to a student-athlete(s) enrolled at Laurentian University. The recipient must be in good academic standing. A recommendation from the Director of Athletics is required. Award recipient(s) must meet CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport), OUA (Ontario University Athletics) and AFA (Athletic Financial Award) guidelines. Application is required. Value: Variable.  ($1000 annually until 2025, variable based on payout from the endowment thereafter.)
