CIBC Wood Gundy/Franklin G.T. Pickard Memorial Awards

Donated by CIBC Wood Gundy Securities Inc., Toronto, Ont. in memory of the late Franklin G.T. Pickard. Value: variable. Recipients: full-time students enrolled in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th of a program in Biology, Chemistry or Mining Engineering that involves mining-related environmental rehabilitation. John C. MacIsaac Memorial Bursary

Value: from $1,000 to $5,000. Recipient(s): full-time student(s) in any year of any undergraduate program. Recipient(s) must be residents of Northern Ontario, have demonstrated financial need and good academic standing, have shown sincere effort and commitment to their academic endeavours, and present a personal profile and letter of recommendation. Scotiabank Awards (3)

Value: $3,000/ea. Recipients: full-time students entering the 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of the Native Human Services program (preferably), with one award designated to an Aboriginal student (preferably). Selection is based on academic achievement (min. 75% average), demonstrated financial need and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. If there are no qualified students in Native Human Services, then the awards may be given to students in any year of any program. Application required.

Métis Nation of Ontario Bursaries

Value: variable. Recipient(s): one or more Métis students, on the basis of financial need, Ontario residency as defined by OSAP and satisfactory academic achievement. Peter Wong Memorial Bursary

Value: $2,000. Recipient: a full-time student entering the 3rd year of Engineering who demonstrates financial need, shows leadership qualities and involvement in the City of Greater Sudbury, and is a resident of Ontario as defined by OSAP. Application required.

Rio Algom Limited Bursaries (10)

Dowling Horseshoe Club Bursary

A gift from the Dowling Horseshoe Club in recognition of the financial needs of students. The Club, founded in 1969, provided resi-dents with an enjoyable competitive setting and contributed to the social fabric of the Dowling community for over 25 years. Value: $1,250. Teresa (Terri) MacMillan Memorial Award

Established by the SGA in memory of Terri MacMillan, who unselfishly committed her life to student activism and various other extracurricular activities for the benefit of her fellow students. Value: $600. Recipient: a member of the SGA who has completed the 1st year of study, maintaining a min. 60% average. The recipient must demonstrate outstanding extra-curricular involvement and submit a 500-word essay describing these activities. Selection is made on the recommendation of the SGA. Sudbury Branch C.I.M.M. Rudolph (Rudy) Kneer Memorial Bursary (3)

Donated by the Sudbury Branch of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy as a memorial to Rudolph (Rudy) Kneer for his dedicated commitment to the Canadian mining industry, particularly in Northern Ontario. He received the Institute's Medal for Distinguished Service in 1979. As founding editor of Northern Ontario Mining News, he combined his love of the newspaper business with his inclination to relate with people in all facets of the industry. Value: $800. Laurentian Association of Mature and Part-time Students “LAMPS” (1997) Bursaries

Donated by the Association of Laurentian Part-time Students. Value: up to $500/ea. Recipients: part-time students who are Ontario residents as defined by OSAP, have demonstrated financial need, and have completed at least one 6-credit course or two 3-credit courses at Laurentian. Aaron Marsaw Award in Political Science (2)

Established to honour the University's first Rhodes Scholar, Aaron Marsaw, a graduate of Political Science and Philosophy. Value: $500. Ben Cameron Bursary (2)

Created by the Academic Council of the School of Commerce and Administration in honour of Ben Cameron, the school's first Emeritus Professor. Value: $500/ea. Recipients: full-time students enrolled in the Commerce program (one student who has a min. 75% average in COMM 2045, and one student who has completed at least 30 credits with a min. 70% average and no failed courses.) Based on financial need and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Application required.

Betty Rhéaume Memorial Bursary

Donated by Mr. Urgel Rhéaume in memory of his esteemed spouse, the late Betty Rhéaume, a devoted nurse and community leader, who always encouraged the youth with whom she worked to develop to their full potential despite life's obstacles. Value: $500. Recipient: a full-time student entering any year of the Nursing program. Preference is given to students who perform volunteer work in the community, are self-motivated, have overcome obstacles to succeed academically, are Ontario residents as defined by OSAP, and have demonstrated financial need. CCH Canadian Limited Bursaries (2)

Value: $500/ea. Recipients: Native students in the 4th year of the Commerce program enrolled in the Corporate Taxation and/or Personal Taxation course. If no students qualify, then the bursaries shall be awarded in this order of preference: (1) to a Native student in 4th-year Commerce; (2) to a Native student in 3rd-year Commerce; (3) to a student entering the 3rd or 4th year of the Commerce program. Friends of L.U. Incorporated Awards (3)

A gift from this tax-exempt charitable foundation established in 1983 in the United States to support scientific research and university-level academic programs at the University. Value: $500. Garnet Rebekah Lodge #233 Bursary

Established by the Charles & Lillian Dobson Women's Addiction Foundation. Value: $500. Recipient: a full-time female student who is a resident of the City of Greater Sudbury and has been (or is) registered in an addiction recovery program in Sudbury. Sudbury Neutrino Observatory Commemorative Bursary

Established by the Department of Physics and Astronomy with the proceeds of a lecture presentation by Stephen Hawking on the occasion of the official opening of the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory in 1998. Value: $500. Recipient: a full-time student in good academic standing entering any year of a Physics or Biomedical Physics program, on the basis of financial need and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Arthur and Eva Solomon Bursary

In memory of Arthur and Eva Solomon who helped to create both the Native Studies and the Native Human Services programs at Laurentian University.  Donated by the Solomon family and friends, three bursaries, each valued at $400, will be awarded to full-time Native students who are enrolled in any year of the following programs: Native Studies, Native Human Services and any other program offered through Laurentian University. Established by the family, friends and colleagues of the late Donna Lynch (1931-1992), to honour this respected and committed public health nurse, whose special interest in and work with young people will long stand as a tribute to her dedication and contribution to community health nursing. André Girouard Award

Established by the French Department (now Department of French Studies) to honour the pioneering role played by André Girouard in this department from 1960, the founding year of the University, to 1986, the year of his retirement. Christopher and Eva Doherty Bursary

This award was established by their children to honor Dr. and Mrs. C.J. Doherty. Dr. Doherty served on the Laurentian University Board of Governors from 1960 to 1968 and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of law by the University in 1985. The bursary is awarded to a student entering the first year of full time study with at least a “B” average. The student must maintain a minimum “B” average to continue receiving the award in subsequent years of study. Outdoor Adventure Leadership Bursary

The bursary, valued at $250, is awarded annually to a student enrolled in the Outdoor Adventure Leadership Programme. Mirko Mehes Memorial Bursary

 

Established by the Mehes family to honor the memory of Mirko Mehes.  This bursary is awarded to aid a full time student enrolled in a Humanities degree at Laurentian University who has achieved a minimum 75% average.  Value is $1,000.00.  Application is required.  Award is renewable for a maximum of three additional years if recipient maintains 75% average.

 

Dr. Bob Wanzel Bursary

 

Established by alumni, family and friends in attendance at the SPAD 25th Reunion celebration in 1998, the Dr. Bob Wanzel Bursary is awarded to a fulltime student in 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year of the SPAD program who can demonstrate financial need, academic excellence (minimum 75%), and leadership qualities.   Application is required. Candidates must attach a detailed letter outlining extra-curricular activities and leadership qualities. Value is variable.

 

Laurentian University Men’s Basketball Bursary

 

Established to support deserving students on the Laurentian University men’s basketball team to ensure athletes can excel both academically and on the court without the added burden of financial concerns.  Award recipients must meet CIS eligibility and AFA guidelines, be members of the Laurentian University Voyageurs men’s basketball team, be residents of the Province of Ontario and be able to demonstrate financial need.  The value of the award is variable.

The donor reserves the right to change the name of the award and the text describing the award should he at some point decide to remove his desire for anonymity.

 

Melissa Willett Memorial Bursary

 

Established by family and friends, Melissa Willet was a Laurentian University student studying in the Science program, April 23, 2007 her life was taken from a tragic motor vehicle accident.  Melissa bright bubbly spirit will remain in her family friends’ memory forever. This bursary is awarded to aid a student of Laurentian University, who is enrolled in the Bachelor of Science (Biomedical Option) program. The recipient must provide a written letter explaining why they are enrolled in the program, what their long term goals are and how they are involved in the community. If no qualified recipient in the Bachelor of Science (Biomedical Option) program, the award may be given to a student in the Bachelor of Science (Anthropology). Value is $500. Allan Epps Award

 

Established to honour the memory of Allan Epps, a dedicated member of the Sudbury mining community.  At his time of death, Allan had 36.5 years of service with Inco Ltd., and encouraged his colleagues to “Quit the whining, let’s get mining.”  This award is intended to recognize a deserving student who shares Allan’s passion for underground mining and the Sudbury community.  The recipient must be enrolled in the Mining Engineering program, must maintain an overall average of 70%, and must demonstrate financial need. The recipient must provide a letter outlining their community involvement or participation in extracurricular activities. Value is $500. Application is required.

 

Sudbury Mine Mill and Smelter Workers Local 598 / CAW Dr. Peter Suschnigg Bursary

 

Established by Local 598 / C.A.W., this bursary is awarded to aid a Laurentian University student enrolled full time in the Labour Studies program.  This bursary honours Dr. Peter Suschnigg, who was an associate professor in the Department of Sociology and a co-founder of the Labour and Trade Union Studies program. He was honoured for his work by the Sudbury and District Labour Council and the Workers’ Health and Safety Centre and is a member of the Occupational Health Clinics for Ontario Workers local advisory committee in Sudbury. The candidate must be related to a CAW member and provide proof of this relation via a letter signed by the president of the local or national CAW office. At minimum, the recipient must be related to a unionized member of any organization and provide proof of this relation via a letter signed by the president of said union. The bursary is awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Value is variable.  Application is required.
 

Pada Memorial Bursary

 

Established by the Pada family, friends and associates, in memory of a fine gentleman and noted CVRD-Inco geologist, Vishnu Pada.  He and his two daughters, Brinda and Arti, died tragically in the crash of Air India flight 182 in 1985. Value: $500. This bursary is awarded to aid a full-time student in the Geology program at Laurentian University. The recipient must demonstrate financial need; the recipient must a graduate student from Marymount Academy Secondary School. If no qualified applicant is chosen from Marymount Academy Secondary School, the bursary will be awarded to a full-time Geology Student at Laurentian University. LUAA-Alumni Association Bursary For Adult Learners

 

Established through a bequest from the late A. Les McDonald.  Mr. McDonald credits much of his success in life to having had the opportunity to complete a degree at Laurentian University as a mature student.  He also served as the President of the Laurentian University Alumni Association from 1975 to 1979 and as a member of the Laurentian University Board of Governors from 1978 59 1987.  His motivation for creating this award was to provide assistance to others, who, like himself, decide to return to their studies later in life.  The Laurentian University Alumni Association Bursary for Adult Learners is awarded to students in good academic standing in any year of study at Laurentian University, who were admitted after an interruption of three years or more in their studies and can demonstrate financial need.  The recipient must be a resident of Ontario as defined by OSAP.  Value is variable.  Bursary application is required.

 

Finlay and Clara MacLeod Memorial Bursary

 

Established by family and friends, Mr. Finlay MacLeod moved to Sudbury where he retired from INCO after 42 years of service.  Mr. Finlay MacLeod and Mrs. Clara MacLeod did not slow down in their retirement years.  Mr. MacLeod became an ordained deacon and they served their community and helped many people through countless hours at the nursing homes, hospitals, Telecare, Meals on Wheels, Catholic charities, and their work with the Holy Trinity and Christ the King churches.  This bursary is awarded to aid a student in financial need enrolled at Laurentian University.  The recipient must provide a letter of proof of service of this or her personal, business, and community life.  Value is $500.  Application is required.

 

Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) - Helen Byrnes Memorial Bursary

 

Established by the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) - Sudbury, this bursary is awarded to aid a female student enrolled full-time in any year of the Sports and Physical Education program.  The bursary is awarded on the basis of academic achievement and financial need.  The recipient must be a resident of Ontario as defined by OSAP.  Value is $1000.  Bursary application is required.

 

Canadian Institute of Mining Bursary

 

Established by Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. The purpose of this award is to provide financial assistance to aid a student of Laurentian University, who is enrolled in the Engineering program.  The student must be a member of Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, or the child or legal dependant of a certified member.  The student must be in good academic standing as defined by student awards and demonstrate financial need and must be a resident of Ontario, as defined by OSAP. The student must submit a one page minimum essay describing the role the CIM plays in serving the mining industry. Value is $1,150.00.  Application is required.

 

Wally Majesky Award

 

Established to honour Wally Majesky by the Workers Health and Safety Centre. The recipient must be enrolled in the Labour Studies program, have good academic standing and demonstrate financial need. Preference will be given to a student who has demonstrated leadership in the social justice movement. Value is $750. Application is required.

 

R.L Beattie Family Award

 

The “R.L. Beattie Family Award” was created in 2008 by Mr. Allan L. Beattie to honour his late father, Robert Leslie Beattie, who passed away in 1953 at the age of 62.  R.L. Beattie arrived in Copper Cliff (now a part of the City of Greater Sudbury) from his father’s Southern Ontario farm in 1911 and took a job as a clerk in the warehouse at INCO. Over the course of his career he rose to be Vice-President, General Manager, and a Director of INCO as well as a Director of the Bank of Toronto and the Toronto General Trust Corporation.  He served with the Canadian Forces in the First World War and was awarded the Military Medal for Bravery.  His Sudbury legacy includes the R.L. Beattie Public School and the Royal Canadian Legion - Branch 224 which was named the R.L. Beattie Branch in his honour.  The purpose of this award is to pay tribute to Mr. Beattie while providing financial assistance to aid a student of Laurentian University who is enrolled full-time in any program. The bursary will be awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Value is variable.  Application is required.

 

United Steelworkers of America Bursary 

 

Established by United Steelworkers of America, this bursary is awarded to a Laurentian University student enrolled in the Labour Studies program.  The bursary is awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP.  Value is variable.  Application is required.

 

Richard Pound SPAD Bursary

 

Established by alumni, family and friends in attendance at the SPAD 35th Reunion celebration in 2007, the Richard Pound SPAD Bursary will be awarded to a student enrolled in the 1st year of the Honours Bachelor of Commerce in Sports Administration.  Selection of the recipient is based on academic excellence (min. 80%) in an Ontario secondary school (6 best U/M courses).  The bursary will be awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP.  Value is $500.  Application is required.

 

James F. Davies Memorial Bursary

 

“James F. Davies Memorial Bursary”.  Established by Department of Earth Sciences family and friends. James F. (Jim) Davies was the Department of Earth Sciences’s first true economic geologist, a discipline he had an immense passion for.  He joined Laurentian University in 1967, having come from the position of Chief Geologist at the Manitoba Department of Mines, and remained a full-time faculty member before retiring in 1990. Dr. Davies has been a passionate, dedicated, tireless researcher and teacher, supervising the training of a very large number of undergraduate and graduate students over the three decades he spent at Laurentian.  This award commemorates the remarkable and never-to-be-forgotten efforts of Dr. James F. Davies towards education, conducting high-quality research, and building the Department of Earth Sciences at Laurentian University. The bursary will be awarded to a student enrolled full time in the Geology program. The recipient will be selected on the basis of demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Value is $1,000.  Application is required.


 J. Conrad Lavigne and Jeanne Canie Lavigne Bursary

 

Established by a planned gift, the purpose of this awarded to aid a full-time student registered in any french language program. The bursary will be awarded on the basis of academic standing(min. 75%) and demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. The recipient must be a resident of Northern Ontario, and must be taking the majority of his/her courses in the French language. Value is variable.  Application is required.

 

A.C.T./UCT United Commercial Travelers Bursary

 

A.C.T./UCT United Commercial Travelers Bursary  .  Established by the A.C.T./UCT United Commercial Travelers Bursary of America.  The purpose of this award is to provide financial assistance to a Laurentian University student who is a resident of the City of Greater Sudbury, if no suitable candidate applies, the award can be given to a resident of North Eastern Ontario.  Value is variable.  Application is required.

 

Epps Family Bursary

 

The “Epps Family Bursary” was established in June of 2008 to recognize the generosity of Allan Epps, father of Julie and Duncan Epps. Allan firmly believed in the value of post-secondary education (at times, more strongly than his children did) and encouraged them in various ways to obtain their degrees. This award seeks to provide financial assistance to a Laurentian University student enrolled in any program to assist with the successful completion of university level studies. Stratford Shakespeare Festival field Trip Award

 

                              The purpose of these two awards is to provide financial assistance to students registered at Laurentian University, who are attending the English Department annual Stratford Shakespeare Festival field trip. Bursaries will be awarded to students who have achieved excellence in ENGL 2535;  Shakespeare or ENGL 2005;   Literatures in English in the year previous to the trip.  These awards will also be based on demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. The deadline for application is September 26 of each academic year. Value is variable.   

 

Laurie Bissonette Bursary

 

Established by the benefactor. The purpose of this award is to provide financial assistance to aid a student of Laurentian University who is entering their 3rd or 4th year in the Commerce program with the intention of pursuing a career as a Chartered Accountant. The bursary will be awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Value is $500.  Application is required.

 

Walker Wood Foundation Scholarship

 

The “Walker Wood Foundation Scholarship” was established in 2008 by the Walker Wood Foundation in order to provide financial assistance to full-time Canadian students enrolled in the Radiation Therapy program and maintaining a 70% average over all courses.  Applicants must be residents of Northern Ontario and are required to submit a one page (double-spaced) personal profile including information regarding their notable achievements, reason for studying in this program, additional interests, and future aspirations.  Selection will be based on academic excellence and financial need. Established by Department of History. The Department of History at Laurentian University is paying tribute to its retired and retiring faculty by creating the Professors of the Past Bursary in their honour. Dr. Josie Hernandez de Leon Bursary

Established by family and friends, Professor of Political Studies at Laurentian University passed away of cancer in 2005. She grew up in Manila and graduated from, and would eventually teach at the University of the Philippines. Later she worked for Senator Rene A.V. Saguisag as Chief of Technical Stall. In 1991 she accepted a CIDA scholarship to Queen’s University. She received her PhD at Queen’s and was eventually offered a teaching position at Laurentian University. Ever the constant educator, she was well-loved by colleagues and students alike. The purpose of this bursary to provide financial assistance to a student enrolled at Laurentian University, in the Nursing program. Value is variable. Application is required.

McMullen Family Bursary

Established by William McMullen. The purpose of this award is to provide financial assistance to aid a student who is enrolled in any program at Laurentian University. The qualified recipient must currently live or have previously resided in the Township of Killarney. The Student Award office will search the Laurentian University database by postal code to ensure the recipient is a resident of the Township of Killarney. If the applicant does not currently reside in Killarney, they must submit a letter stating that they previously lived in Killarney. If there are no qualified recipients from the Killarney area, the qualified recipient can be a child of a parent who is or have been an employee of the William McMullen Medical Office. This bursary is awarded to deserving students enrolled in the Geography program on the basis of financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP). Value is variable.

Dr. Robert Williams Bursary 

Established by family and friends. The purpose of this award is to provide assistance to aid a student of Laurentian University who is enrolled in the Geology program who has achieved a minimum 75% average. Dr. Robert Williams, a retired Calgary surgeon, was 89 years old when he followed in the footsteps of his three granddaughters and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in geology from Laurentian University. Dr. Williams embodies the term lifelong learner. He got his first degree in general science in 1941 from the University of Alberta. Two years later, he graduated with a doctor of medicine. He did postgraduate work in surgery in Toronto and Edinburgh, Scotland, then started to practice at the Calgary General Hospital. At the age of 68, he got his Bachelor of Arts degree in economics. Thomas and Aurore Lemieux Family Bursary

Established by the family of Thomas and Aurore Lemieux in their honour to recognize and support the wonderful care provided to our seniors by the members of the nursing profession. The purpose is to provide financial assistance to a student enrolled at Laurentian University, in the nursing program. Preference will be given to a student working or volunteering with elderly people. The student must provide a document outlining that they have worked or volunteered with elderly people. Margaret Clausi Memorial Bursary

 

Established by family. The purpose of this award is to provide financial assistance to aid a student from Timmins enrolled at Laurentian University in the Bachelor of Arts program. The bursary will be awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Value is variable.  Application required.  The late Mrs. Clausi was a teacher in Timmins who graduated from Laurentian University.  Her love for higher learning impacted on her four sons who each completed university degrees – three of whom graduated from Laurentian University.

Judith Weisz Woodsworth Bursary

 

The Judith Weisz Woodsworth Bursary was established by her family and friends in May of 2008 to honour the first woman president of Laurentian University, 2002-2008.  The purpose of this award is to assist a deserving student, enrolled in any program, who possesses all the attributes of a good university student (academic aptitude and potential for leadership) but who may require financial assistance to gain entry or continue his or her studies at the university.  The bursary will be awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP.  Value is variable.  Application is required.

 

M’naagaa Eskoonwejig – Celebrating Our Student Scholarship

 

Established by School of Native Human Services to aid a full time student enrolled in the School of Native Human Services program. The recipient must have completed all 2nd year requirements and have a minimum 76% cumulative average or higher. The recipient must have an 80% class attendance rate. The qualified recipient will receive the award the first week of December. Application will be available at the School of Native Human Services and must be submitted to the School of Native Human Services no later than October 15. Value is $400.

 

Frith Family Award for Nursing Excellence

 

The Frith Award for Nursing Excellence was established in 2009 by the Styles Family Foundation (Jacqueline Frith Styles) in recognition of members of the Frith family who resde or have resided in Sudbury, including John Frith, Sue Anne Frith Kozman, Douglas C Frith, M.P, and Howard Frith.  In benefits students in the Nursing program at Laurentian Univeersity who are dedicated to their studies but require financial assistance in order to continue their studies.  The Award recipient will receive priority for the Award in following years to enable them to complete their studies.  Additionally, preference will be given to students of Aboriginal heritage.  Application is required.  Value is $1500.

 

The Laurentian University Federation Memorial Award

 

Laurentian and its federated institutions created the Laurentian University Federation Memorial Award to to recognize the sacrifices of our soldiers and their families, of those who give their lives doing what we as a nation have asked of them.

The award will provide full-time Laurentian students tuition for up to four years of study, and free on-campus housing in Sudbury for the first year.

To be eligible, a student must be under the age of 26, a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, dependant of a Canadian Forces member killed while deployed on combat or peace support operations, and registered as a full-time undergraduate at Laurentian University in Sudbury or one of its federated universities.

John McIlwain Memorial Bursary

 

Established by family and friends. The purpose of this award is to provide financial assistance to aid a student of Laurentian University who is enrolled in their 3rd or 4th year the School of Human Kinetics program. The recipient must have a minimum average of 75%. A brief letter (less than 1 page) indicating their involvement in laboratory work or research work within the School of Human Kinetics. The ideal recipient will demonstrate commitment to the School of Human Kinetics labs and a passion for learning and helping others learn through laboratory experiences. (i.e. volunteer in the labs assisting the technicians with lab demonstrations; independent study in the labs; lab internship; volunteers to help with high school tours of the labs). Hélène Babin Jacob Bursary

 

Established by family and friends, this bursary is awarded on the basis of financial need to a full time aboriginal student enrolled in the nursing or social work program. Secondary preference will be given to an aboriginal student in the francophone program. Value is variable. Application is required.

 

Jessie Hamilton Bursary

 

Established by family and friends. The purpose of this award is to provide financial assistance to a 3rd or 4th year student enrolled in the Anthropology program.  The bursary will be awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Archaeology Field School Bursary

Established by the Anthropology Department, these bursaries will benefit students at Laurentian University enrolled in the Anthropology 3095 course. Three awards will be awarded as follows: one award to a student on the basis of demonstrated financial need, one award to a student with the highest academic standing and one award to a student whose career aspirations most closely align with the field school.  Each applicant must write a short statement outlining the student’s background in anthropology, reasons for enrolling in the field course and career goals or objectives. The successful candidates’ names will be submitted to the Office of Student Awards for disbursements. Applications must be submitted to the Anthropology Department.

 

Sudbury Credit Union Bursary

 

Established by Sudbury Credit Union, Lively Branch. The purpose of this award is to provide financial assistance to aid a student of Laurentian University from the Greater City of Sudbury area. The recipient must be a 2nd, 3rd or 4th year undergraduates enrolled in the Commerce, Economics or SPAD program. The recipient must be in good academic standing and demonstrate financial need. Value is $1,000. Application is required.

Ceming Family Laurentian University Bursary

Established by Jack, Maija, Jason and Tanja Ceming. The purpose of this bursary will be awarded to a student enrolled in any program at Laurentian University on the basis of participation in interuniversity athletics, demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Award recipient must meet CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) eligibility and AFA (Athletic Financial Award) and OUA (Ontario University Athletic) guidelines.  Marc St-Laurent Commerce Award

Established through planned giving, this annual award will offer financial assistance to a Francophone enrolled full-time in the 3rd or 4th year of the 4-year program of the School of Commerce and Administration. The student must have financial need, be a resident of Ontario as defined by OSAP and live in northern Ontario.

Frith Family Award for Nursing Excellence

St-Aubin Ouellette Francophone Bursary

This bursary, created through planned giving, is awarded to a full-time student in any program who is taking a majority of courses in French. He or she must demonstrate financial need according to criteria established by Laurentian University’s Student Awards Office, live in Northern Ontario and be a resident of Ontario, as defined by OSAP. St-Aubin Ouellette Bursary for Student-Athletes

 

Established through planned giving, this award is presented to a student-athlete who is a member of the varsity sports program and receives a recommendation from the team coach as well as the director of Athletics. The student must meet all eligibility criteria for CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) and OUA (Ontario University Athletics) as well as guidelines for athletic bursaries.  The student must be registered full-time in any program, demonstrate financial need in accordance with criteria established by Laurentian University’s Student Awards Office, live in northern Ontario, and be a resident of Ontario as defined by OSAP.  Amount is variable. Lamps 40th Anniversary (1969-2009) Bursary

Established by the Laurentian Association of Mature and Part-Time Students (LAMPS).  The purpose of this award is to provide financial assistance to a part-time student enrolled in any program at Laurentian University.  Value is variable.  Application is required.

John Krupp Memorial Bursary

The John Krupp Memorial Bursary was established by Masha Krupp for Laurentian Unviersity’s 50th anniversary in memory of John Krupp.  A bursary in memory of a giving individual.  John Krupp believed profoundly in two basic principles: that everyone deserves the education they need to pursue their life goals; and that all people have a moral obligation to gve to those less fortunate than themselves.  A hard-working miner from Sudbury whose own formal education ended after grade 4, Mr. Krupp and his wife raised six children, many of whom went on to post-secondary education.  Mr. Krupp was also a deeply religious Babtist who donated at least 10 percent of this earnings every year to charity-regardless of this own financial challenges.  Krupp’s tho bedrock principles fused in his contention that all people- not just in those who can afford it- have a right to higher education.  This memorial bursary for a student in financial need is a fitting tribute to a quiet hero who had faith in human goodness and in all people’s ability to improve their lives through learning.  The purpose of this award is to provide financial assistance to a Laurentian University student enrolled in the Mining Engineering program to assist with the successful completion of university level studies.  The bursary will be awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need.  Value is $2,500.  Application is required.

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Undergraduate Award

 

Established by the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, family and friends. The purpose of this award is to provide assistance to a student of Laurentian University who is enrolled in the Chemistry or Biochemistry program. The purpose of this award is to provide financial assistance a student of Laurentian University who is enrolled in the English program, and who is registered in ENGL 4105. The bursary will be awarded on the basis of academic excellence, demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Value is variable. Application is required.

 

Hector Sobol Memorial Bursary

 

Established by family and friends, the purpose of this award is to provide financial assistance a student of Laurentian University who is enrolled in the 3rd or 4th year Nursing program. The recipient must have maintained a 75% average. The bursary will be awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Value is variable. Trebb Family Bursary

 

Established by Laurentian University graduates Ronald and Mary Trebb as a tribute to their three sons Matthew, Andrew and Christopher Trebb who have also attended Laurentian University to inspire others to continue their education locally and in honour of Harry Trebb who strongly valued the pursuit of higher education. The purpose of this award is to provide financial assistance to a student of Laurentian University who is enrolled in any program and who is a resident of the City of Greater Sudbury. Women's Association of the Mining Industry of Canada (WAMIC) - Wood Award

 

Established by Women’s Association of the Mining Industry of Canada (WAMIC) Foundation to encourage students to work or pursue a career in the geosciences industry.  The purpose of this award is to provide scholarships to cover a minimum of $6,000 towards tuition to aid students of Laurentian University who are enrolled in the 3rd or 4th year of the Bachelor of Science in Environmental Earth Science, Bachelor of Science in Earth Sciences, Bachelor of Engineering (Mining and Chemical), or Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies (once approved). The bursary will be awarded on the basis of academic excellence, minimum 80% , demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Application is required.

 

SPAD 35th Alumni Awards
 

Established by SPAD Alumni 35th Anniversary.  The purpose of thie award is to provide financial assistance to aid a student of Laurentian University who is enrolled in the SPAD program.  This bursary is open to 2nd, 3rd or 4th year SPAD students.  Two awards of approximately $1,000/year.  One for a 4th year student and one for a 2nd or 3rd year student. Minimum of 75% average in courses to date, high level of contribution to the program (SPAD Council, research, ISM work, events participation, volunteerism in sport/event management, etc.) & financial need required.  A recommendation from the SPAD Director and at least one SPAD or Commerce professor is required.  Value is variable.  Application is required.

 

Derek Wilkinson Memorial Bursary

Ken and Denise Derrett SPAD Bursary

 

Established by Ken and Denise Derrett.  The purpose of this award is to provide financial assistance to aid a student of Laurentian University who is enrolled in the SPAD program.  Students are to submit a short (500 word) essay with their application highlighting why they chose to enrol in SPAD and what they aspire to do with a SPAD degree.  The recipient must be a resident of Ontario, as defined by OSAP. Peter and Shirley Moutsatsos Family Bursary

 

Established by the Moutsatsos family. The purpose of this award is to provide financial assistance to aid a student entering any year of the Commerce program at Laurentian University. The bursary will be awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Preference will be given to a student who has attended high school in Sudbury. Trueclaim Exploration Inc Award

 

Established by Trueclaim Exploration Inc., the purpose of the award is to provide financial assistance to a member of the Wahnapitae First Nation enrolled at Laurentian University in the Environmental Studies, Earth Sciences or Engineering program. Applicants must provide proof of their status as a member of the Wahnapitae First Nation. In the event there are 2 student applicants enrolled in the mentioned programs, preference will be given to the student with the greatest financial need. An application is required.

Bernie and Mary Langlois Family Bursary

 

Established by Bernie and Mary Langlois to provide financial assistance to a student at Laurentian University. The recipient must be enrolled at the undergraduate or graduate level in the Faculty of Sciences and Engineering, Management, Medicine (registered through Laurentian University) or Architecture (once approved by LU senate). Where possible, preference will be given to a student who currently lives or previously resided in the Coniston area. If there is no qualified applicant from the Coniston area, the bursary will be awarded to a qualified student in the previously mentioned programs. This scholarship will be awarded to the Concurrent Education Student who demonstrates the qualities of academic success, critical reflection, creativity and compassion in the Initial Practicum. Kim Croteau Memorial Scholarship

 

Established by family and friends in remembrance of Kim Croteau, a devoted mother of two who found the courage and determination to successfully acquire a university degree in Social Work as a mature student, while at the same time balancing the challenges of fighting cancer. Kim demonstrated sincere commitment to her vocation as a Social Worker, determined to put the needs of her patients before her own, even when her ailments made it difficult for her to continue working. The purpose of this award is to provide financial assistance to a mature student of Laurentian University who is enrolled in the Social Work program. Established through planned giving, this award provides financial assistance to a full-time student enrolled in a program offered by the French-language School of Education. Students must demonstrate financial need, be Ontario residents as defined by OSAP, live in northern Ontario, have an overall average of at least 70% and take a majority of courses in French. Aimee Leonard Music Bursary

 

Established by family and friends. In her short 27 years, Aimee Leonard released What Happened, an independently produced album, performed in various folk festivals, including Mariposa and Northern Lights Festival Boreal, was featured by CBC Radio 3 and touched many lives. "She was happy, precocious, good at everything, "She was a top student, good in sports, had lots of energy." But one thing that stood out about Leonard was her affinity for music. "She always loved music, always wanted to sing. The purpose of this award is to provide financial assistance annually to a music student enrolled in either the BA or the BFA program, who demonstrates excellence in one or a combination of the following: academics, vocal performance and theatre arts. John Partanen Estate Scholarship

 

Donated by the John Partanen Estate Scholarship Trust Fund for the benefit of students in Mining.  The scholarship will be awarded to students in the Mining Engineering program on the basis of academic standing and financial need. Bursary application is required.

 

Day Group Scholarship

 

Established by the Day Group. The award(s) is presented to a student-athlete(s) who are member(s) of the Laurentian University Voyageur Wrestling team. The recipient must be in good academic standing. A recommendation from the team coach as well as the Director of Athletics is required. The recipient(s) must meet all eligibility criteria for CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) and OUA (Ontario University Athletics) and AFA (Athletic Financial Award) guidelines.
