BURSARIES

HUMANITIES

Students must submit completed bursary application forms to the Student Awards Office, 1st floor, R.D. Parker Building. A Bursary application forms can be printed using Adobe Acrobat.  Unless otherwise, specified, only one bursary application forms is required for all bursaries.

Noëlle Ladouceur Bursary

  • Requirements: Established by Noëlle Ladouceur, to provide financial assistance to one student enrolled in the “École des sciences de l’éducation, and to one student enrolled in the Baccalauréat en education - English”.  Application is required.
  • Value: $5,000

RUTHCO Bursary

  • Requirements: The student recipient will have made a significant contribution to social justice issues and be studying full-time at Laurentian University with preference given to students studying women’s studies, social work, or Native human services. The student must have a 75% average, be a resident of Ontario and demonstrate financial need. Application required. The RUTHCO Bursary was established by Nancy Ruth to honour the lives and values of her Sudbury colleagues and friends, Mary Lue Hinds and Anne Cole.

The Masha Krupenich/Frosia Izhikova Award in Modern Languages

  • Requirements: A student enrolled in any year of any program offered by the Department of Modern Languages and Literature, on the basis of academic standing and financial need. Application required.  Established in 2001 by Maria Krupp in memory of Masha Krupenich and Frosia Izhikova.
  • Value: $1,500

The Del Frate Family Bursaries (3)

  • Requirements: Full-time students, on the basis of financial need and Ontario residency, as defined by OSAP. Preference is given to students enrolled in any year of the Italian Studies program. Application required.
  • Value: $1,000/ea

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science Bursary

  • Requirements: A full-time student entering any year of a program in Mathematics or Computer Science, on the basis of financial need and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Application required. Donated by the staff and faculty of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science.
  • Value: $500

The English Department Bursary

  • Requirements: A full-time student entering any year of an English program, on the basis of financial need and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Application required.
  • Value: $500

The Colilli Family Bursary

  • Requirements: A full-time student entering any year of the Italian Studies degree program, on the basis of financial need and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Application required.  Donated by the family of Dr. Paul Colilli, professor in the Department of Modern Languages.
  • Value: $500 

Arthur and Eva Solomon Bursary

  • Requirements: Donated by the Solomon family and friends, three bursaries will be awarded to full-time Native students who are enrolled in any year of the following programs: Native Studies, Native Human Services and any other program offered through Laurentian University. These bursaries are based on financial need and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. A bursary application is required. In memory of Arthur and Eva Solomon who helped to create both the Native Studies and the Native Human Services programs at Laurentian University

The André Girouard Award

  • Requirements: A student entering any year of a program offered by the Department of French Studies, on the basis of financial need, good academic standing and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Application required.  Established by the French Department (now Department of French Studies) to honour the pioneering role played by André Girouard in this department from 1960, the founding year of the University, to 1986, the year of his retirement.

The Langue et civilisation françaises bursary

  • Requirements: A student entering any year of the Langue et civilisation françaises program (for Anglophone, French as a second language), on the basis of financial need, good academic standing and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Application required. Donated by the staff and faculty of the School of Translators and Interpreters (now part of the Department of French Studies).
  • Value: $250

The Sudbury YWCA Bursary

  • Requirements: A mature student (female) entering any year of an undergraduate program, on the basis of financial need. Preference is given to students whose program of study relates to the topic of Violence against Women. Students must submit a short outline of their interest in or work on the subject of Violence against Women. Application required.
  • Value: $250

The Lucien Matte Foundation Bursaries

  • Requirements: Students enrolled in the teacher-training program, on the basis of financial need. Selection is made on the recommendation of the director of the School of Education.Application required.

The Senator Rhéal Belisle Bursaries

  • Requirements: Students enrolled in the teacher-training program, on the basis of financial need. Selection is made on the recommendation of the director of the School of Education. Application required.

The Aurelio Taricani Memorial Bursary

  • Requirements: Established by Bruno and Nellie Marcolini, the Aurelio Taricani Memorial Bursary is awarded to a student in any year of the Italian Studies degree program, who can demonstrate financial need, and is a resident of Ontario, as defined by OSAP. Application is required.

Dr. Tuan Ton-That Memorial Bursaries

  • Requirements: Established to honour Tuan Ton-That by his family and friends. The “Dr. Tuan Ton-That Memorial Bursaries” are awarded annually to one full time student in each of the following programs; Economics, Commerce, and Music or Physics. Bilingualism in French and English is a plus but not a requirement. The student must demonstrate financial need, and Ontario residency, as defined by OSAP.  Application is required.

The SGA Capital Campaign Bursaries

  • Requirements: Students who are SGA members, Ontario residents as defined by OSAP, have financial need, are active in extracurricular activities and meet the other criteria specified below. Students must submit a short statement outlining how they meet criteria. Application required.
    Donated by the SGA to the University's Capital Fundraising Campaign (1997), the following bursaries are awarded annually.

The Amy Bateman SGA Award - other criteria: leadership qualities and enrolment in Women's Studies.

The Jay Ford Memorial Bursary

  • Requirements: A full-time student entering the 3rd or 4th year of an English-language program offered by the Joint Department of Philosophy. Applicants must achieve a min. 75% average in PHIL 2505, demonstrate financial need, and be residents of Ontario, as defined by OSAP. Application required.

The Pat Aitken Memorial Bursary

  • Requirements:  Established by the St. Andrews united Church choir and also the members of the Church Council.  Mrs. Aitken was an accomplished writer and community activist;  she participated in many community movements.  Among her many causes she was passionate about saving the University music program.  This bursary is to aide an upper year student in the music program with financial need.    Application is required.

The Oliver Fine Arts Bursary

  • Requirements: An eligible student from SSM, ON, in a Fine Arts program, an eligible student from Blind River, ON registered in a Fine Arts program, an eligible student from Northern Ontario registered in a Fine Arts program, in the same priority (1 to 3 above), registered in a Gerontology program at Huntington.   Established in 1997 by Mildred Oliver n honour of her and her husband’s interest in and support of music and the arts.

Sudbury Band Memorial Bursary

  • Requirements: This bursary will be awarded to the most deserving brass major student in memory of the City of Sudbury Band whose members entertained generations of Sudburians with their summer concerts in Bell Park.

No Strings Attached Community Band of Sudbury

  • Requirements: This bursary to be presented to a deserving music student who satisfies the following criteria:  that this be a woodwind, brass, or percussion student who shows excellence in performance and is an activie volunteer.
  • Value: $100 

Mirko Mehes Memorial Bursary

  • Requirements:Established by the Mehes family to honor the memory of Mirko Mehes.  This bursary is awarded to aid a full time student enrolled in a Humanities degree at Laurentian University who has achieved a minimum 75% average.  Application is required.  Award is renewable for a maximum of three additional years if recipient maintains 75% average.

Stratford Shakespeare Festival field Trip Award

  • Requirements: The purpose of these two awards is to provide financial assistance to students registered at Laurentian University, who are attending the English Department annual Stratford Shakespeare Festival field trip. Bursaries will be awarded to students who have achieved excellence in ENGL 2535;  Shakespeare or ENGL 2005;   Literatures in English in the year previous to the trip.  These awards will also be based on demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. The deadline for application is September 26 of each academic year.

Martin Family Bursary

  • Requirements: Established by family and friends.  The purpose of this award is to provide financial assistance to aid a student of Laurentian University who is enrolled in the Laurentian Music program.  The bursary will be awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP.  Application is required.

Laurentian Music Bursary

  • Requirements: Established by the Music Department. This bursary is awarded to aid a Laurentian University student enrolled in the Music program. The bursary will be awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP.  The recipient must be recommended by the Music department. Application is required.

Margaret Clausi Memorial Bursary

  • Requirements: Established by family. The purpose of this award is to provide financial assistance to aid a student from Timmins enrolled at Laurentian University in the Bachelor of Arts program. The bursary will be awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP.  The late Mrs. Clausi was a teacher in Timmins who graduated from Laurentian University. Her love for higher learning impacted on her four sons who each completed university degrees – three of whom graduated from Laurentian University. Application required

Department of English Faculty Bursary

  • Requirements: Established by faculty members of the Department of English. The purpose of this award is to provide financial assistance a student of Laurentian University who is enrolled in the English program, and who is registered in ENGL 4105. The bursary will be awarded on the basis of academic excellence, demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Application is required.

Jeanne d’Arc Sullivan Memorial Bursary

  • Requirements: Established by family and friends. The purpose of this award is to provide financial assistance to a sole support parent studying at Laurentian University who is enrolled in the School of Education, (English program) or l’École des sciences de l’éducation. The bursary will be awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Value is variable. Application is required.

Roland Bidal Bursary in French Education

  • Requirements: Established by family and friends. The purpose of this award is to provide financial assistance to a student of Laurentian University who is enrolled in the École des sciences de I'éducation, with academic excellence (minimum 80%). The bursary will be awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Value is variable. Application is required.

Aimee Leonard Music Bursary

 

  • Requirements:  Established by family and friends. In her short 27 years, Aimee Leonard released What Happened, an independently produced album, performed in various folk festivals, including Mariposa and Northern Lights Festival Boreal, was featured by CBC Radio 3 and touched many lives. "She was happy, precocious, good at everything, "She was a top student, good in sports, had lots of energy." But one thing that stood out about Leonard was her affinity for music. "She always loved music, always wanted to sing. The purpose of this award is to provide financial assistance annually to a music student enrolled in either the BA or the BFA program, who demonstrates excellence in one or a combination of the following: academics, vocal performance and theatre arts. The bursary will be awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Application is required.
