SOCIAL SCIENCES
Students must submit completed bursary application forms to the Student Awards Office, 1st floor, R.D. Parker Building.Bursary application forms can be printed using Adobe Acrobat. Unless otherwise, specified, only one bursary application forms is required for all bursaries.
Rio Algom Limited Bursaries (10)
- Requirements: Eight full-time students entering the 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of a Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Extractive Metallurgy or Mining Engineering program, and whose studies involve mining-related environmental rehabilitation; AND, two full-time students from the Serpent River First Nations, who are enrolled in any year of any program. Selection is based on financial need and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Application required.

- Requirements: Full-time students entering any year of the Commerce program, specialized program in Economics, or the Master of Business Administration, on the basis of financial need and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Application required.

F. Jean MacLeod Conservation Bursaries
- Requirements: Full-time students entering the 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of a Geography degree program, with a min. 60% average, on the basis of demonstrated financial need and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Application required.

McKechnie-Rousell Awards (2)
- Requirements: A full-time student entering the 3rd or 4th year of the Geology or Environmental Earth Science program, on the basis of financial need, good academic standing and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Application required. Donated by the staff, faculty, former students and the Earth Science Club of the Department of Earth Sciences, to recognize the contributions of Donald C. McKechnie and Don H. Rousell in founding the department.

- Requirements: A full-time student entering any year of the History program, on the basis of financial need, good academic standing and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Application required. Donated by the faculty and staff of the Department of History.

Elmer McVey Bursary
- Requirements: Established to honour Elmer McVey. The “Elmer McVey Bursary” is awarded to a full or part-time student in the Labour Studies program, must belong to or belonged to a trade union affiliated to the Canadian Labour Congress; or the connection can be the current or former involvement of a member of their immediate family or must show a demonstration of participation in labour and/or community activism promoting the values of the labour movement and demonstrate financial need. - Requirements: A full-time student enrolled in a Political Science program, on the basis of academic standing, financial need and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP.Application required. Doris Routhier Award in Political Science
- Requirements: A full-time student enrolled in a Political Science program, on the basis of academic standing, financial need and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Application required. CIBC Wood Gundy/Franklin G.T. Pickard Memorial Awards
- Requirements: Full-time students enrolled in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th of a program in Biology, Chemistry or Mining Engineering that involves mining-related environmental rehabilitation. Recipients must submit a short personal profile. Based on academic standing, leadership and extra-curricular activities, Ontario residency and financial need, as defined by OSAP. Professor Rupert Cook Memorial Bursary
- Requirements: Established by family and friends, the Professor Rupert Cook Memorial bursary is awarded to a student in third or fourth year of the Economics program who can demonstrate financial need, and is a resident of Ontario, as defined by OSAP. Application is required.

Dr. Tuan Ton-That Memorial Bursaries
- Requirements: Established to honour Tuan Ton-That by his family and friends. The “Dr. Tuan Ton-That Memorial Bursaries” are awarded annually to one full time student in each of the following programs; Economics, Commerce, and Music or Physics. Bilingualism in French and English is a plus but not a requirement. The student must demonstrate financial need, and Ontario residency, as defined by OSAP. Application is required.

SGA Capital Campaign Bursaries
- Requirements: Students who are SGA members, Ontario residents as defined by OSAP, have financial need, are active in extracurricular activities and meet the other criteria specified below. Students must submit a short statement outlining how they meet criteria. Application required. United Steelworkers of America Bursary

- Requirements: Full time students enrolled in a Political Science program; awarded on the basis of academic standing, financial need, and Ontario residency by OSAP. Application required. Established by the family and friends in memory of the late Keith Sinclair.

Evelyn Ham/LUSU Memorial Bursary
- Requirements: A full-time female student entering the 1st, 2nd or 3rd year of the Labour Studies program, or any program or course dealing with labour relations. Selection is based on financial need and Ontario residency, as defined by OSAP. Application required.

John Filo Bursary
- Requirements: A full or part-time student in the Labour Studies program, must demonstrate financial need. Application is required. The faculty of the Labour Studies program makes the selection.

Sudbury Mine Mill and Smelter Workers Local 598 / CAW Dr. Peter Suschnigg Bursary
- Requirements: Established by Local 598 / C.A.W., this bursary is awarded to aid a Laurentian University student enrolled full time in the Labour and Trade Union Studies program. This bursary honours Dr. Peter Suschnigg, who was an associate professor in the Department of Sociology and a co-founder of the Labour and Trade Union Studies program. He was honoured for his work by the Sudbury and District Labour Council and the Workers’ Health and Safety Centre and is a member of the Occupational Health Clinics for Ontario Workers local advisory committee in Sudbury. The candidate must be related to a CAW member and provide proof of this relation via a letter signed by the president of the local or national CAW office. At minimum, the recipient must be related to a unionized member of any organization and provide proof of this relation via a letter signed by the president of said union. The bursary is awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Application is required.

Melissa Willett Memorial Bursary
- Requirements: Established by family and friends, Melissa Willet was a Laurentian University student studying in the Science program, April 23, 2007 her life was taken from a tragic motor vehicle accident. Melissa bright bubbly spirit will remain in her family friends’ memory forever. This bursary is awarded to aid a student of Laurentian University, who is enrolled in the Bachelor of Science (Biomedical Option) program. The recipient must provide a written letter explaining why they are enrolled in the program, what their long term goals are and how they are involved in the community. If no qualified recipient in the Bachelor of Science (Biomedical Option) program, the award may be given to a student in the Bachelor of Science (Anthropology). Application is required.

Wally Majesky Award
- Requirements: Established to honour Wally Majesky by the Workers Health and Safety Centre. The recipient must be enrolled in the Labour Studies program, have good academic standing and demonstrate financial need. Preference will be given to a student who has demonstrated leadership in the social justice movement. Application is required.

United Steelworkers of America Bursary
- Requirements: “United Steelworkers of America Bursary”. Established by United Steelworkers of America, this bursary is awarded to a Laurentian University student enrolled in the Labour Studies program. The bursary is awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Application is required.

Professors of the Past Bursary
- Requirements: Established by Department of History. The Department of History at Laurentian University is paying tribute to its retired and retiring faculty by creating the Professors of the Past Bursary in their honour. The purpose is to provide financial assistance annually to a deserving History student at Laurentian University. Application is required.

Raymond Labbé Commemorative Bursary
- Requirements: This bursary is awarded to deserving students enrolled in the Geography program on the basis of financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP).

Archaeology Field School Bursary

Requirements: Established by the Anthropology Department, these bursaries will benefit students at Laurentian University enrolled in the Anthropology 3095 course. Three awards will be awarded as follows: one award to a student on the basis of demonstrated financial need, one award to a student with the highest academic standing and one award to a student whose career aspirations most closely align with the field school. Each applicant must write a short statement outlining the student’s background in anthropology, reasons for enrolling in the field course and career goals or objectives. The successful candidates’ names will be submitted to the Office of Student Awards for disbursements Application must be submitted to the Anthropology Department.

Requirements: Established by the Sudbury Credit Union, Lively Branch. The purpose of this award is to provide financial assistance to aid a student of Laurentian University from the Greater City of Sudbury area. The recipient must be a 2nd, 3rd or 4th year undergraduates enrolled in the Commerce, Economics or SPAD program. The recipient must be in good academic standing and demonstrate financial need. Application is required.

Margaret Clausi Memorial Bursary
- Requirements: Established by family. The purpose of this award is to provide financial assistance to aid a student from Timmins enrolled at Laurentian University in the Bachelor of Arts program. The bursary will be awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. The late Mrs. Clausi was a teacher in Timmins who graduated from Laurentian University. Her love for higher learning impacted on her four sons who each completed university degrees – three of whom graduated from Laurentian University. Application required

Women's Association of the Mining Industry of Canada (WAMIC) - Wood Award

Established by Women’s Association of the Mining Industry of Canada (WAMIC) Foundation to encourage students to work or pursue a career in the geosciences industry. The purpose of this award is to provide scholarships to cover a minimum of $6,000 towards tuition to aid students of Laurentian University who are enrolled in the 3rd or 4th year of the Bachelor of Science in Environmental Earth Science, Bachelor of Science in Earth Sciences, Bachelor of Engineering (Mining and Chemical), or Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies (once approved). The bursary will be awarded on the basis of academic excellence, minimum 80% , demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Application is required.
