BURSARIES

EARTH SCIENCE

Students must submit completed bursary application forms to the Student Awards Office, 1st floor, R.D. Parker Building. A Bursary application forms can be printed using Adobe Acrobat.  Unless otherwise, specified, only one bursary application forms is required for all bursaries.

The Rio Algom Limited Bursaries (10)

  • Requirements: Eight full-time students entering the 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of a Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Extractive Metallurgy or Mining Engineering program, and whose studies involve mining-related environmental rehabilitation; AND, two full-time students from the Serpent River First Nations, who are enrolled in any year of any program. Selection is based on financial need and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Application required.

The McKechnie-Rousell Awards (2)

  • Requirements: A full-time student entering the 3rd or 4th year of the Geology or Environmental Earth Science program, on the basis of financial need, good academic standing and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Application required. Donated by the staff, faculty, former students and the Earth Science Club of the Department of Earth Sciences, to recognize the contributions of Donald C. McKechnie and Don H. Rousell in founding the department.

The CIBC Wood Gundy/Franklin G.T. Pickard Memorial Awards

  • Requirements: Full-time students enrolled in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th of a program in Biology, Chemistry or Mining Engineering that involves mining-related environmental rehabilitation. Recipients must submit a short personal profile. Based on academic standing, leadership and extra-curricular activities, Ontario residency and financial need, as defined by OSAP. Application required. Donated by CIBC Wood Gundy Securities Inc., Toronto, Ont. in memory of the late Franklin G.T. Pickard.

The J.P. Bickell Foundation Awards

  • Requirements: Students of Science or Engineering, with a specialization in Geology, or with the intention of specializing in an engineering field related to geology, mining or metallurgy. Application required.

The SGA Capital Campaign Bursaries

  • Requirements: Students who are SGA members, Ontario residents as defined by OSAP, have financial need, are active in extracurricular activities and meet the other criteria specified below. Students must submit a short statement outlining how they meet criteria. Application required. Donated by the SGA to the University's Capital Fundraising Campaign (1997), the following bursaries are awarded annually

The Alain Mainville Earth Science Award - other criteria: enrolment in Earth Science.

Women's Association of the Mining Industry of Canada (WAMIC) - Wood Award

  • Established by Women’s Association of the Mining Industry of Canada (WAMIC) Foundation to encourage students to work or pursue a career in the geosciences industry.  The purpose of this award is to provide scholarships to cover a minimum of $6,000 towards tuition to aid students of Laurentian University who are enrolled in the 3rd or 4th year of the Bachelor of Science in Environmental Earth Science, Bachelor of Science in Earth Sciences, Bachelor of Engineering (Mining and Chemical), or Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies (once approved). The bursary will be awarded on the basis of academic excellence, minimum 80% , demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Application is required.
