BURSARIES

NURSING

Students must submit completed bursary application forms to the Student Awards Office, 1st floor, R.D. Parker Building. A Bursary application forms can be printed using Adobe Acrobat. Unless otherwise, specified, only one bursary application forms is required for all bursaries.

Marie Goring Bursary

  • Requirements: The “Marie Goring Bursary” is awarded to two students in good academic standing in any year of study in Nursing at Laurentian University, who have demonstrated excellence in clinical practice, can demonstrate financial need, and are residents of Northern Ontario.  Application is required. Established to honour Mrs. Marie Goring by her family and friends. Mrs. Goring moved to the Sudbury area as a nurse and this award is intended to encourage young nurses to dedicate themselves to maintaining academic and clinical excellence in their chosen profession.
  • Value: $1,000 (minimum)

The Betty Rhéaume Memorial Bursary

  • Requirements: A full-time student entering any year of the Nursing program. Preference is given to students who perform volunteer work in the community, are self-motivated, have overcome obstacles to succeed academically, are Ontario residents as defined by OSAP, and have demonstrated financial need. Students must present a letter that explains how they meet criteria. Application required. Donated by Mr. Urgel Rhéaume in memory of his esteemed spouse, the late Betty Rhéaume, a devoted nurse and community leader, who always encouraged the youth with whom she worked to develop to their full potential despite life's obstacles.

The Garnet Rebekah Lodge #233 Bursary

  • Requirements: A full-time female student (preferably from Northeastern Ontario) entering the 3rd year of the Nursing or Social Work program, on the basis of financial need and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. The bursary is preferably given in January. Application required.

The Dr. Faustina Kelly-Cook Memorial Bursary

  • Requirements: A full-time student entering the final year of the Post R.N. Nursing program (preferably), on the basis of financial need and leadership qualities. Selection is made on the recommendation of the School of Nursing. Application required. Donated by Miss Mary Whalen in memory of Dr. Faustina Kelly-Cook.
  • Value: $450

The Donna Lynch Memorial Awards (2)

  • Requirements: Students entering the 3rd or 4th year of the Nursing program, on the basis of financial need. Preference is given to students who have demonstrated a commitment to community health nursing. Selection is made on the recommendation of the School of Nursing. Application required. Established by the family, friends and colleagues of the late Donna Lynch (1931-1992), to honour this respected and committed public health nurse, whose special interest in and work with young people will long stand as a tribute to her dedication and contribution to community health nursing.

The School of Nursing Bursary

  • Requirements: A full-time student entering any year of the Nursing program, on the basis of financial need and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Application required.
  • Value: $225 

The Dr. Karen Blackford Memorial Bursary

  • Requirements: A female student who has completed the 1st-year course "Chronic Health Challenge" and is enrolled in a related upper-year course in Nursing. The student must demonstrate financial need, maintain a min. academic standing of 70%, and be a resident of Ontario as defined by OSAP. Application required.

The Pat Anderson Memorial Bursary

  • Requirements: A full-time student in any year of the English-language Nurse Practitioner program, on the basis of financial need, academic achievement (min. 70% overall average), and Ontario residency, as defined by OSAP. Application required.

Christopher and Eva Doherty Bursary

  • Requirements: The bursary is awarded to a student entering the first year of full time study with at least a “B” average. The student must maintain a minimum “B” average to continue receiving the award in subsequent years of study. Preference will be given to Northern Ontario students who are studying in a discipline in the health sciences, and can demonstrate financial need. Application is required. This award was established by their children to honor Dr. and Mrs. C.J. Doherty. Dr. Doherty served on the Laurentian University Board of Governors from 1960 to 1968 and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of law by the University in 1985.

The SGA Capital Campaign Bursaries

  • Requirements: Students who are SGA members, Ontario residents as defined by OSAP, have financial need, are active in extracurricular activities and meet the other criteria specified below. Students must submit a short statement outlining how they meet criteria. Application required. Donated by the SGA to the University's Capital Fundraising Campaign (1997), the following bursaries are awarded annually.

The Hélène Babin Jacob Bursary

  • Requirements: Established by family and friends, this bursary is awarded on the basis of financial need to a full time student enrolled in the nursing program. Preference will be given to a Métis student in the francophone program. Application is required.

Dr. Josie Hernandez de Leon Bursary

  • Requirements: Established by family and friends, Professor of Political Studies at Laurentian University passed away of cancer in 2005. She grew up in Manila and graduated from, and would eventually teach at the University of the Philippines. Later she worked for Senator Rene A.V. Saguisag as Chief of Technical Stall. In 1991 she accepted a CIDA scholarship to Queen’s University. She received her PhD at Queen’s and was eventually offered a teaching position at Laurentian University. Ever the constant educator, she was well-loved by colleagues and students alike. The purpose of this bursary to provide financial assistance to a student enrolled at Laurentian University, in the Nursing program. Application is required.

Audrey Pickard Bursary

  • Requirements: Established by the family and friends.  The purpose is to provide financial assistance to a student enrolled at Laurentian University, in the Nursing program.  The bursary will be awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Application is required.

Thomas and Aurore Lemieux Family Bursary

  • Requirements: Established by the family of Thomas and Aurore Lemieux in their honour to recognize and support the wonderful care provided to our seniors by the members of the nursing profession. The purpose is to provide financial assistance to a student enrolled at Laurentian University, in the nursing program. Preference will be given to a student working or volunteering with elderly people. The student must provide a document outlining that they have worked or volunteered with elderly people. The bursary will be awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP.  Application is required.

John and Patricia Malysh Bursary

  • Requirements: Established by John and Pat Malysh. The purpose of these two awards is to provide financial assistance to aid two students of Laurentian University who are enrolled in the third year and in the fourth year of the Nursing program. The bursaries will be awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Application is required.

Frith Family Award for Nursing Excellence

  • Requirements: The Frith Award for Nursing Excellence was established in 2009 by the Styles Family Foundation (Jacqueline Frith Styles) in recognition of members of the Frith family who resde or have resided in Sudbury, including John Frith, Sue Anne Frith Kozman, Douglas C Frith, M.P, and Howard Frith.  In benefits students in the Nursing program at Laurentian Univeersity who are dedicated to their studies but require financial assistance in order to continue their studies.  The Award recipient will receive priority for the Award in following years to enable them to complete their studies.  Additionally, preference will be given to students of Aboriginal heritage.  Application is required.

  • Requirements: Established by family and friends, this bursary is awarded on the basis of financial need to a full time aboriginal student enrolled in the nursing or social work program. Secondary preference will be given to an aboriginal student in the francophone program.  Application is required.

Hector Sobol Memorial Bursary

  • Requirements: Established by family and friends, the purpose of this award is to provide financial assistance a student of Laurentian University who is enrolled in the 3rd or 4th year Nursing program. The recipient must have maintained a 75% average. The bursary will be awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP.  Application is required.
