BURSARIES

SOCIAL WORK

Students must submit completed bursary application forms to the Student Awards Office, 1st floor, R.D. Parker Building. A Bursary application forms can be printed using Adobe Acrobat. Unless otherwise, specified, only one bursary application forms is required for all bursaries.

RUTHCO Bursary

  • Requirements: The student recipient will have made a significant contribution to social justice issues and be studying full-time at Laurentian University with preference given to students studying women’s studies, social work, or Native human services. The student must have a 75% average, be a resident of Ontario and demonstrate financial need. Application required. The RUTHCO Bursary was established by Nancy Ruth to honour the lives and values of her Sudbury colleagues and friends, Mary Lue Hinds and Anne Cole.
  • Value: $5,000

Scotiabank Awards (3)

  • Requirements: Full-time students entering the 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of the Native Human Services rogram (preferably), with one award designated to an Aboriginal student (preferably). Selection is based on academic achievement (min. 75% average), demonstrated financial need and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. If there are no qualified students in Native Human Services, then the awards may be given to students in any year of any program. Application required.
  • Value: $3,000/ea

The Garnet Rebekah Lodge #233 Bursary

  • Requirements: A full-time female student (preferably from Northeastern Ontario) entering the 3rd year of the Nursing or Social Work program, on the basis of financial need and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. The bursary is preferably given in January. Application required.
  • Value: $450

Arthur and Eva Solomon Bursary

  • Requirements: Donated by the Solomon family and friends, three bursaries will be awarded to full-time Native students who are enrolled in any year of the following programs: Native Studies, Native Human Services and any other program offered through Laurentian University. These bursaries are based on financial need and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. A bursary application is required.  In memory of Arthur and Eva Solomon who helped to create both the Native Studies and the Native Human Services programs at Laurentian University.
  • Value: $400

The Dr. Molly Hancock Bursaries (2)

  • Requirements: One francophone and one anglophone full-time student enrolled in the School of Social Work, on the basis of financial need and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Application required. Established in 1997 by the francophone and anglophone faculty and staff members of the School of Social Work to honour their colleague, Molly Hancock, an outstanding professor.
  • Value: $250/ea

The SGA Capital Campaign Bursaries

  • Requirements: Students who are SGA members, Ontario residents as defined by OSAP, have financial need, are active in extracurricular activities and meet the other criteria specified below. Students must submit a short statement outlining how they meet criteria. Application required.  Donated by the SGA to the University's Capital Fundraising Campaign (1997), the following bursaries are awarded annually.
    The Anne Biggar Social Work Award - other criteria: enrolment in Social Work.

The Hélène Babin Jacob Bursary

  • Requirements: Established by family and friends, this bursary is awarded on the basis of financial need to a full time aboriginal student enrolled in the nursing or social work program. Secondary preference will be given to an aboriginal student in the francophone program.  Application is required.

Kim Croteau Memorial Scholarship

  • Requirements: Established by family and friends in remembrance of Kim Croteau, a devoted mother of two who found the courage and determination to successfully acquire a university degree in Social Work as a mature student, while at the same time balancing the challenges of fighting cancer. Kim demonstrated sincere commitment to her vocation as a Social Worker, determined to put the needs of her patients before her own, even when her ailments made it difficult for her to continue working. The purpose of this award is to provide financial assistance to a mature student of Laurentian University who is enrolled in the Social Work program. The bursary will be awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need. Application is required
