SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING

Students must submit completed bursary application forms to the Student Awards Office, 1st floor, R.D. Parker Building.Bursary application forms can be printed using Adobe Acrobat.  Unless otherwise, specified, only one bursary application forms is required for all bursaries.

The Vale Limited Mining Awards (6)

  • Requirements: Donated by Inco Limited, Ontario Division, six mining-related bursaries will be awarded annually to students registered in any year of a mining-related program on the basis of financial need, academic excellence, and participation in extra-curricular activities. Bursary application is required.
  • Value: $2,000

The Peter Wong Memorial Bursary

  • Requirements: A full-time student entering the 3rd year of Engineering who demonstrates financial need, shows leadership qualities and involvement in the City of Greater Sudbury, and is a resident of Ontario as defined by OSAP. Application required.
  • Value: $2,000

The Rio Algom Limited Bursaries (10)

  • Requirements: Eight full-time students entering the 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of a Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Extractive Metallurgy or Mining Engineering program, and whose studies involve mining-related environmental rehabilitation; AND, two full-time students from the Serpent River First Nations, who are enrolled in any year of any program. Selection is based on financial need and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Application required.

The Inmet Mining Corporation Bursaries (2)

  • Requirements: Students entering any year of the Mining or Extractive Metallurgy program, on the basis of demonstrated financial need and Ontario residency, as defined by OSAP. Application required.

The Henrik and Regina Waern Bursaries (4)

  • Requirements: Two 2nd-year students (one in Chemistry, one in Biochemistry), one 3rd-year and one 4th-year student (in either Chemistry or Biochemistry). Selection is based on financial need, academic achievement (min. 70%), and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Application required.

Marita I. Mallory Cancer Reaserch Bursary

  • Requirements: Establishedby the Mallory family and friends, this bursary will be awarded annually to a full time graduate student enrolled at Laurentian University, in the field of cancer research or related oncological studies.  Application Required.

The Sudbury Branch C.I.M.M. Rudolph (Rudy) Kneer Memorial Bursary (3)

  • Requirements: Students entering the 3rd year of the Engineering program, on the basis of financial need, academic standing, demonstrated leadership, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Application required. Donated by the Sudbury Branch of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy as a memorial to Rudolph (Rudy) Kneer for his dedicated commitment to the Canadian mining industry, particularly in Northern Ontario. He received the Institute's Medal for Distinguished Service in 1979. As founding editor of Northern Ontario Mining News, he combined his love of the newspaper business with his inclination to relate with people in all facets of the industry.

The McKechnie-Rousell Awards (2)

  • Requirements: A full-time student entering the 3rd or 4th year of the Geology or Environmental Earth Science program, on the basis of financial need, good academic standing and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Application required. Donated by the staff, faculty, former students and the Earth Science Club of the Department of Earth Sciences, to recognize the contributions of Donald C. McKechnie and Don H. Rousell in founding the department.

  • Requirements: A full-time student entering any year of an Engineering program, on the basis of financial need and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Application required.

The Wynn Watson Bursaries (2)

  • Requirements: Full-time students enrolled in any year of a Biology program, on the basis of financial need and Ontario residency, as defined by OSAP. Application required. Donated by the staff and faculty of the Department of Biology.

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science Bursary

  • Requirements: A full-time student entering any year of a program in Mathematics or Computer Science, on the basis of financial need and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Application required. Donated by the staff and faculty of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science.
  • Value: $500

The Founders of Physics Undergraduate Bursary

  • Requirements: A full-time student enrolled in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of the Physics or Biomedical Physics undergraduate program, on the basis of financial need and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Application required. Established to recognize the contributions of the founding members of the Department of Physics and Astronomy.

The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory Commemorative Bursary

  • Requirements: A full-time student in good academic standing entering any year of a Physics or Biomedical Physics program, on the basis of financial need and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Application required. Established by the Department of Physics and Astronomy with the proceeds of a lecture presentation by Stephen Hawking on the occasion of the official opening of the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory in 1998.

The Anthropology Bursary

  • Requirements: A full-time student entering any year of the Anthropology program, on the basis of financial need and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Application required.

The Department of Psychology Bursary

  • Requirements: A full-time student entering any year of a Psychology program, on the basis of financial need and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Application required.

The CIM - Maintenance Division Bursary for Engineering

  • Requirements: Established by the Organizing Committee of the Mine Maintenance Conference, the CIM - Maintenance Division Bursary for Engineering is awarded to a student entering the Engineering program with a good academic record, can demonstrate financial need, and is a resident of Northern Ontario. Application is required.

The James Costigan Memorial Bursary

  • Requirements: The “James Costigan Memorial Bursary” is awarded to two students in the Mining Engineering program, who have a strong work ethic, can demonstrate financial need, and are residents of Ontario, as defined by OSAP. Value is variable. Application is required.
    The endowment was established in memory of James (Jamie) Costigan by family and friends.

Christopher and Eva Doherty Bursary

  • Requirements: The bursary is awarded to a student entering the first year of full time study with at least a “B” average. The student must maintain a minimum “B” average to continue receiving the award in subsequent years of study. Preference will be given to Northern Ontario students who are studying in a discipline in the health sciences, and can demonstrate financial need. Application is required. This award was established by their children to honor Dr. and Mrs. C.J. Doherty. Dr. Doherty served on the Laurentian University Board of Governors from 1960 to 1968 and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of law by the University in 1985.

The CIBC Wood Gundy/Franklin G.T. Pickard Memorial Awards

  • Requirements: Full-time students enrolled in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th of a program in Biology, Chemistry or Mining Engineering that involves mining-related environmental rehabilitation. Recipients must submit a short personal profile. Based on academic standing, leadership and extra-curricular activities, Ontario residency and financial need, as defined by OSAP. Application required. Donated by CIBC Wood Gundy Securities Inc., Toronto, Ont. in memory of the late Franklin G.T. Pickard.

The J.P. Bickell Foundation Awards

  • Requirements: Students of Science or Engineering, with a specialization in Geology, or with the intention of specializing in an engineering field related to geology, mining or metallurgy. Application required.

The SGA Capital Campaign Bursaries

  • Requirements: Students who are SGA members, Ontario residents as defined by OSAP, have financial need, are active in extracurricular activities and meet the other criteria specified below. Students must submit a short statement outlining how they meet criteria. Application required. Donated by the SGA to the University's Capital Fundraising Campaign (1997), the following bursaries are awarded annually

Dr. Tuan Ton-That Memorial Bursaries

  • Requirements: Established to honour Tuan Ton-That by his family and friends. The “Dr. Tuan Ton-That Memorial Bursaries” are awarded annually to one full time student in each of the following programs; Economics, Commerce, and Music or Physics. Bilingualism in French and English is a plus but not a requirement. The student must demonstrate financial need, and Ontario residency, as defined by OSAP.  Application is required.

The Allan Epps Award

  • Requirements: Established to honour the memory of Allan Epps, a dedicated member of the Sudbury mining community.  At his time of death, Allan had 36.5 years of service with Inco Ltd., and encouraged his colleagues to “Quit the whining, let’s get mining.”  This award is intended to recognize a deserving student who shares Allan’s passion for underground mining and the Sudbury community.  The recipient must be enrolled in the Mining Engineering program, must maintain an overall average of 70%, and must demonstrate financial need. The recipient must provide a letter outlining their community involvement or participation in extracurricular activities. Application is required.

The Pada Memorial Bursary

  • Requirements:  Established by the Pada family, friends and associates, in memory of a fine gentleman and noted CVRD-Inco geologist, Vishnu Pada.  He and his two daughters, Brinda and Arti, died tragically in the crash of Air India flight 182 in 1985. This bursary is awarded to aid a full-time student in the Geology program at Laurentian University. The recipient must demonstrate financial need; the recipient must a graduate student from Marymount Academy Secondary School. If no qualified applicant is chosen from Marymount Academy Secondary School, the bursary will be awarded to a full-time Geology Student at Laurentian University. Application is deadline by May 1.

The Melissa Willett Memorial Bursary

  • Requirements:  Established by family and friends, Melissa Willet was a Laurentian University student studying in the Science program, April 23, 2007 her life was taken from a tragic motor vehicle accident.  Melissa bright bubbly spirit will remain in her family friends’ memory forever. This bursary is awarded to aid a student of Laurentian University, who is enrolled in the Bachelor of Science (Biomedical Option) program. The recipient must provide a written letter explaining why they are enrolled in the program, what their long term goals are and how they are involved in the community. If no qualified recipient in the Bachelor of Science (Biomedical Option) program, the award may be given to a student in the Bachelor of Science (Anthropology).  Application is required.

Canadian Institute of Mining Bursary

  • Requirements:  Established by Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. The purpose of this award is to provide financial assistance to aid a student of Laurentian University, who is enrolled in the Engineering program.  The student must be a member of Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, or the child or legal dependant of a certified member.  The student must be in good academic standing as defined by student awards and demonstrate financial need and must be a resident of Ontario, as defined by OSAP. The student must submit a one page minimum essay describing the role the CIM plays in serving the mining industry. Application is required.

James F. Davies Memorial Bursary

  • Requirements: “James F. Davies Memorial Bursary”.  Established by Department of Earth Sciences family and friends. James F. (Jim) Davies was the Department of Earth Sciences’s first true economic geologist, a discipline he had an immense passion for.  He joined Laurentian University in 1967, having come from the position of Chief Geologist at the Manitoba Department of Mines, and remained a full-time faculty member before retiring in 1990. Dr. Davies has been a passionate, dedicated, tireless researcher and teacher, supervising the training of a very large number of undergraduate and graduate students over the three decades he spent at Laurentian.  This award commemorates the remarkable and never-to-be-forgotten efforts of Dr. James F. Davies towards education, conducting high-quality research, and building the Department of Earth Sciences at Laurentian University. The bursary will be awarded to a student enrolled full time in the Geology program. The recipient will be selected on the basis of demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP.  Application is required.

Dr. Robert Williams Bursary 

  • Requirements: Established by family and friends. The purpose of this award is to provide assistance to aid a student of Laurentian University who is enrolled in the Geology program who has achieved a minimum 75% average. Dr. Robert Williams, a retired Calgary surgeon, was 89 years old when he followed in the footsteps of his three granddaughters and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in geology from Laurentian University. Dr. Williams embodies the term lifelong learner. He got his first degree in general science in 1941 from the University of Alberta. Two years later, he graduated with a doctor of medicine. He did postgraduate work in surgery in Toronto and Edinburgh, Scotland, then started to practice at the Calgary General Hospital. At the age of 68, he got his Bachelor of Arts degree in economics. Application is required.

Jessie Hamilton Bursary

 

  • Requirements:  Established by family and friends. The purpose of this award is to provide financial assistance to a 3rd or 4th year student enrolled in the Anthropology program.  The bursary will be awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Application is required.

Archaeology Field School Bursary

  • Requirements:  Established by the Anthropology Department, these bursaries will benefit students at Laurentian University enrolled in the Anthropology 3095 course. Three awards will be awarded as follows: one award to a student on the basis of demonstrated financial need, one award to a student with the highest academic standing and one award to a student whose career aspirations most closely align with the field school.  Each applicant must write a short statement outlining the student’s background in anthropology, reasons for enrolling in the field course and career goals or objectives. The successful candidates’ names will be submitted to the Office of Student Awards for disbursements Application must be submitted to the Anthropology Department.

John Krupp Memorial Bursary

  • Requirements: The John Krupp Memorial Bursary was established by Masha Krupp for Laurentian Unviersity’s 50th anniversary in memory of John Krupp.  A bursary in memory of a giving individual.  John Krupp believed profoundly in two basic principles: that everyone deserves the education they need to pursue their life goals; and that all people have a moral obligation to gve to those less fortunate than themselves.  A hard-working miner from Sudbury whose own formal education ended after grade 4, Mr. Krupp and his wife raised six children, many of whom went on to post-secondary education.  Mr. Krupp was also a deeply religious Babtist who donated at least 10 percent of this earnings every year to charity-regardless of this own financial challenges.  Krupp’s tho bedrock principles fused in his contention that all people- not just in those who can afford it- have a right to higher education.  This memorial bursary for a student in financial need is a fitting tribute to a quiet hero who had faith in human goodness and in all people’s ability to improve their lives through learning.  The purpose of this award is to provide financial assistance to a Laurentian University student enrolled in the Mining Engineering program to assist with the successful completion of university level studies.  The bursary will be awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need.  Application is required.

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Undergraduate Award

  • Requirements: Established by the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, family and friends. The purpose of this award is to provide assistance to a student of Laurentian University who is enrolled in the Chemistry or Biochemistry program. The bursary will be awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP.  Application is required.

Women's Association of the Mining Industry of Canada (WAMIC) - Wood Award

  • Established by Women’s Association of the Mining Industry of Canada (WAMIC) Foundation to encourage students to work or pursue a career in the geosciences industry.  The purpose of this award is to provide scholarships to cover a minimum of $6,000 towards tuition to aid students of Laurentian University who are enrolled in the 3rd or 4th year of the Bachelor of Science in Environmental Earth Science, Bachelor of Science in Earth Sciences, Bachelor of Engineering (Mining and Chemical), or Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies (once approved). The bursary will be awarded on the basis of academic excellence, minimum 80% , demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Application is required.

Trueclaim Exploration Inc Award

  • Requirements: Established by Trueclaim Exploration Inc., the purpose of the award is to provide financial assistance to a member of the Wahnapitae First Nation enrolled at Laurentian University in the Environmental Studies, Earth Sciences or Engineering program. Applicants must provide proof of their status as a member of the Wahnapitae First Nation. In the event there are 2 student applicants enrolled in the mentioned programs, preference will be given to the student with the greatest financial need. An application is required.

Bernie and Mary Langlois Family Bursary

  • Requirements: Established by Bernie and Mary Langlois to provide financial assistance to a student at Laurentian University. The recipient must be enrolled at the undergraduate or graduate level in the Faculty of Sciences and Engineering, Management, Medicine (registered through Laurentian University) or Architecture (once approved by LU senate). Where possible, preference will be given to a student who currently lives or previously resided in the Coniston area. If there is no qualified applicant from the Coniston area, the bursary will be awarded to a qualified student in the previously mentioned programs. The bursary will be awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Value is variable. Application is required.

John Partanen Estate Scholarship

 

  • Requirements:  Donated by the John Partanen Estate Scholarship Trust Fund for the benefit of students in Mining.  The scholarship will be awarded to students in the Mining Engineering program on the basis of academic standing and financial need. Bursary application is required.
